Orienteering maps in the Rotorua area


Map name Details Sample of the map
Centennial Park City park near the Southern entrance to Rotorua. Area includes farmland and memorial blocks of trees. Also includes the grounds of the Waiariki Institute of Technology. Usually accessed from Mokoia Drive. Fieldwork and cartography by Ian Simpson and Michael Wood. First used for a Park-O in 2003.

Mark's Maps Mark McKenna has drawn many of the maps currently used by the Rotorua Orienteering Club. Mark has a special mark that appears on many of his maps. Watch out for it!

Ngahewa An area of farmland which includes several ridges. Located 20 minutes South of Rotorua on Highway 5 (opposite Rainbow Mountain).

Okere A farmland map first used in the early 1980's. A steep and hard map which includes many blocks of native forest.

Omahanui "The Happy Map" Farmland and eucalyptus forest on Te Kopia Road in Waikite Valley, 50 minutes drive from Rotorua. First used for the Central District Championships in 2002. Fieldwork by Mark McKenna, Ian Simpson and Jim Lewis (Taupo Club).

Peka Forest Originally one of Rotorua's farmland maps, about 5km south of the city center. It was planted with pine trees in 1993, and since the forest was thinned it has not been suitable for orienteering.

Redwood Forest (Formerly Forest Research) Originally known as the Forest Research map and started life as a black and white map of the area around the Forest Research buildings. Includes research areas of blocks of trees and a section of the Redwood Grove forest.

Shirley Lakes An area of runnable eucalyptus forest. Located on Manawahe Road between Lakes Rotoehu and Rotoma. Fieldwork and cartography by Mark McKenna. This map was produced in 1998 for the Central District Championships.

Silver Hills Runnable eucalyptus forest. This map is usually accessed from Lichenstein Road, 20 minutes drive East of Rotorua. First used for the National Championships in 2001. Fieldwork and cartography by Mark McKenna.

Thomas Hills An area of runnable eucalyptus forest. Located on Manawahe Road between Lakes Rotoehu and Rotoma. Fieldwork and cartography by Mark McKenna. This map was produced in 1998 for the Central District Championships

Tui Ridge Park Farmland and forest with many tracks. Located on Oturoa Road, 20 minutes drive from Rotorua.

Waipapa Eucalypt forest with many tracks and hills. Located on Highway 33 and Maniatutu Road, 20 minutes drive from Rotorua. Fieldwork and cartography by Ian Simpson. First used for the Model event for the National Championships in 2001.
