Doug Brown is a true plugger. A gritty American winger who turns on the offense like a light switch. Intelligent. Skilled. Fluid. Adaptable. Brownie is a strong Red Wings utility player. He can play the point on the power play or the forward positions on the scoring line or checking line. He scored two key playoff goals. in the run for the repeat last year. With blood on his red beard he scored the tying goal in game 2 of the Finals to send it into overtime. Doug comes from an American family with strong hockey genes. His brother, Greg also played in the NHL. Doug played four seasons while at Boston College and made the Hockey East First All-Star Team. in both his junior and senior years. He earned a place on TEAM USA in 1986 and 1989, and 1991 World Championships and on the 1991 Canada Cup team. Brownie has never been drafted. He started his NHL career as a free agent and signed with New Jersey in 1986. During his first full season (1987-88), he was named the Devil's Top Rookie. He palyed with the Devils in the 1988 conference final and scored the first playoff over time goal. Doug was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1993 and scored his career highs in goals (18), assists (37) and total points (55). He joined the Red Wings in 1995 as part of the NHL waiver draft. In the 1996-97 conference finals against Colorado, Doug assisted on two game winning goals, He scored two goals in the final game of the Stanley Cup series last year to cap off the Red Wings repeat. Doug and his wife Maureen have two sons and two daughters, and spends the off season in Harrison New York playing golf and tennis. |
