1998/99 Vienna Warhawk Basketball
1999 Fairfax County Basketball
Championship
Vienna 57 Reston 55
March 13, 1999 - The Vienna Warhawks beat the Reston Wolverines
57-55 in the Finals of the Fairfax County Youth Basketball Tournament to win the 12 Year
Old Boys Fairfax County Championship. |
Vienna built a double digit lead early in the first half, but Reston was able
to cut into the lead with some timely 3 point shots and a tough full court press. At
the half, Vienna held a 33-26 advantage. In the second half, Vienna maintained their
lead until a late surge by Reston. The Wolverine's press caused Vienna to make some
costly turnovers resulting in some quick points and a tie score with less than a minute to
play. Vienna answered with a pull up jumper from Brent Locey from 15 feet that gave
the Warhawks a two point lead with 17 seconds left in the game. Since Vienna had
three fouls to give before Reston could shoot freethrows, the Warhwaks fouled a player the
next two times Reston inbounded the ball forcing the Wolverines to reset, and to take
precious time off the clock. Reston inbounded the ball for the last time with
only 4 seconds left, and turned the ball over at 2.4 seconds by stepping on the baseline
before a shot could be attempted. Vienna inbounded the ball long and ran out the
clock to win 57-55. |
The Warhawk's were led by Brent Locey's 24 points and 13 rebounds, followed by
Ryan Boyer with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Derek Feussner and Chris McNerney scored 9
points each. Sawyer Sams did a little of
everything with 3 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 blocked shot. Every Vienna player made a significant contribution during the Championship Series. In the quarter-finals against Great Falls, Brendan Hanifin got the Warhawks rolling with 14 points including two 3-pointers. Brock Boone scored in double digits with 10 points. Brian Landry and Jeff Manthe scored 5 points each in the game. In the semi-finals against Southwest, Feussner stepped up to score 15 points including three 3-pointers. McNerney had 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals. Boyer added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Kwame Safo had 7 points and 2 assists. Stuart Rawlinson sealed the game with 4 freethrows down the stretch. Over the tournament, Locey averaged 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists, and Feussner averaged 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Due to their outstanding performances, they were selected as the MVPs of the tournament. Duane Taylor and Paul Gipko coached the Warhawks to a 12-2 regular season and a
22-3 overall record. This group of Vienna players has won a County Championship
every year since entering the County Select program as 10 year olds (1997, 1998, 1999).
