Andy "Bod" Norman has received his first Berkshire 1st team call-up a week or so back against Oxford and contributed magnificantly to the teams eventual victory and play-off spot for promotion to Division One. Tom Bass has also played his first ever match for the Berkshire U17's and went on to win all of his matches. Well done to you both! |
Clare Beavis and Adam Turner continued to display their impressive run of form by liifting the Robin Deasley Trophy at the weekend (23-Nov-2003). They finished the day unbeaten in the group stages, then proceeded to demolish Janine Fisher and Keith Vincent in the Quarter-Finals. They came through a tough semi against Kevin Walker and Sheila Moore, before beaten Andrea Farmer and Andy King in the final.
They both get half-price tickets to the end of season Dinner Dance.
Overall, Shaw did quite well in the tournament ... Bod & Becks were narrowly beaten by the eventually runners-up in the Quarters ... the latter then going on to beat Karen and Bryan in the semi's. Jackie & Michael narrowly missed out on taking the plate event.
Well done!
The run of results against Newbury continued into the first leg of the Blackford Cup. Shaw have built up a good 108 point lead to go into the second leg on Wednesday (12th Nov).
Becks had a brilliant run in her singles to get 6 points off Julia, but Andy won 31 points from his singles, just allow Bryan to get one point!). We don't talk about the ladies doubles against Julia & Sheila (suffice to say that Karen & Becks failed to claim a point!). The Men's and the other Ladies swung Shaw's way. Andy & Becks claimed a well-deserved end in the Mixed off Julia & Bryan, whilst Adam & Clare and Karen & Tony won the remaining Mixed Doubles.
The second leg saw Newbury come out fighting and switched their side around slightly. Sheila was now playing the singles and Julia the two ladies. The singles ran true to form - Shaw winning the mens and Newbury the ladies. Surprisingly, Becks and Karen managed to get a few points on the board in their first doubles game, after their whitewash in their previous leg. Clare and Karen managed to half the match in the second ladies.
In the Men's, Tony and Andy had to work hard for their points, but Tony and Adam had to settle for a half in the other men's. In the Mixed, Clare & Adam won their first mixed match and secured a half against Julia & Nigel whilst Andy & Becks put up a brave fight but couldn't quite hold back Sheila & Bryan.
Shaw will now face Cannons in the Semi-final.
Voted for by Shaw's members, Helen Roberts has been voted the Most Improved Player and Kevin Walker has picked up yet another award as Shaw's Player's Player. Well done!
Kevin Walker was presented with a very special award at this year's Presentation Dinner Dance. He was totally stunned, but delighted to be presented with the Terry Snook Trophy from Daphne Snook, in recognition of the tireless work for badminton in the local area and within the county ... and all before he turns 40!!
Pam Norris & Tony Walker are the Winners of the 11th Schneider Tournament beating Kevin Walker & Adrian Lovell 21-12 in the final. At the other end of the trophy scale, Keith Simms and Richard Ilsley played some great badminton against Mel Chalker & Andrew Nicholson to lift the Bottoms Award!
