My Red Sox Collection

1/19:

The Red Sox have signed free agent OF Marty Cordova. He was the 1995 AL Rookie of the Year winner with the Minnesota Twins. Cordova can play left or center, and will be a backup in those positions. He spent most of last year at DH with the Twins. In 1999, Cordova hit .288 with 14 home runs and 70 RBI.

12/24:

The Red Sox Have signed LHP Jeff Fassero to a one-year contract. He had a difficult 1999, going 5-14 with a 7.20 ERA with Seattle and Texas, but was one of the best leftys before then. Fassero will fill the left-handed starter role created when Kent Merker left via free agency. If Jeff Fassero can return to his pre-1999 form, he could be a help to the red Sox in 2000.

12/23:

The Red Sox have agreed to a contract with top Korean lefty Sang-Hoon Lee. Lee, 28, won Korea's equivalent of the Cy Young Award in 1995, with a record of 20-5, and a 2.01 ERA. He can start or be used out of the bullpen. He will probably get work in both of those positions.

12/16:

The Red Sox have made a deal with the Houston Astros, getting OF Carl Everett in exchange for SS Adam Everett and LHP Greg Miller. Everett (.325, 25 HR, 108 RBI, 27 SB in 1999) plays CF, meaning that Darren Lewis will be platooned in right with Nixon, or traded. The outfield will be much better in 2000 with Everett, who finished 8th in the NL batting race last year. O'Leary, Carl Everett, and Lewis/Nixon Left to Right.

11/17:

Pedro Martinez, no surprise here, won the Cy Young Award in the AL! He is just the third pitcher to win the award in each league, behind Gaylord Perry and Randy Johnson, who won his NL CY in 1999. Pedro collected all 28 first-place votes, only the fourth AL pitcher to accomplish that. The last was Roger Clemens in 1991. Pedro was better, though.

11/11:

Jimy Williams is AL Manager of the Year. He got 20 of 28 First place votes and had 115 points. Second place Art Howe of the A's had 85. Jimy won because the Sox were supposed to finish no better than fourth after the loss of Mo Vaughn but, they won the Wild Card for the second straight year and made it to the ALCS.

Pedro continues to get awards:
AP Player of the Year
Players' Choice AL Outstanding Pitcher
Players Choice Player of the Year (both leagues, all players!)

The AL Cy Young award will be handed out November 16 and will be handed to Pedro, who won the pitchers triple crown. (ERA, K's and Wins)
