PASCO -- Six-foot-eight right-hander David Ruffing
struck out nine in a complete-game performance as Walla Walla ended
Yakima Valley's baseball season with a 5-2 decision in the Eastern
Region playoffs Saturday.
YVCC finished its season with a 24-18 overall. Walla Walla
finished its season at 24-16 after losing 2-1 to Columbia Basin in the
day's second game. CBC earned the second and final Eastern Region berth
to the NWAACC tournament in Longview, Wash., beginning May 23.
Ruffing kept the Yaks off-balance offensively most of the afternoon
until YVCC scored two runs in the sixth on a double by Brian Thomson.
Ruffing walked none
But the damage already had been done. Walla Walla scored a run in the
third on Nyger Morgan's two-out single up the middle, then put the game
away with four runs in the fifth, all off YVCC ace Brandon Gottier
(11-3).
Morgan had a two-run double in the fifth that sparked the Warriors in
that inning. Dusty Druffle followed with an RBI single, and Sean
McCauley also had an RBI double.
The five runs off Gottier were the most the sophomore right-hander
had allowed in a single game all season.
Gottier struck out two to increase his career strikeout total to 190.
Right-hander Joel Jenft replaced Gottier in the fifth and allowed
only a ninth-inning single. He struck out one and walked one.
Jacob Sur, Chad Carey and Jerald Estill each finished 2-for-4 for the
Yaks.
