TIPS OF THE WEEK

Updated February 6, 2000

REFEREES - Make a committment to yourself to make the call. What I mean is don't change a call for the sake of "giving them a break" or because you don't want to face the music. A cross-check in the head is 5+GM, if they push the net off intentionally in the last 2min, call the Penalty Shot. You are penalizing the non-offending team by chickenning out.

LINESMEN - be prepared to help out at all times. If your partner gets pushed off his/her line, GET THERE. If the Ref can't catch up on a fast break, GET THERE. If your partner covers up for you, don't hang him/her out to dry, be sure to switch positions until it is safe to switch back.

BEGINNERS - playoffs are coming and you may not get many games. Don't take this personally, but instead you should make it a point to be ready to go. You never know when you will be needed. It is also a good idea to go out to a few pressure packed playoff games to watch. You can see how the more experienced Officials handle it.
