On Sunday June 30, 2008 Homenetmen of New York held it's first annual picnic and soccer tournament at Plattdeutsch Park in Franklin Square, NY. The event was indeed a success packed with sports, dance, food, and entertainment for children.

Eight teams participated in the day long tournament, which had players 35 and older from New York and New Jersey. The teams were sponsored individualy and played under names such as, Ararat, Striker, Akhtamar, etc. For the soccer fans, it was a thrill to see and hear the excitement of the competition in Armenian and other languages. Neither heat, rain, nor exhaustion kept these Armenian athletes from competing in a sport-like manner. After a round-robbin tournament and playoffs, the trophy was won by ex-Homenetmen NY players team headed by Simon Bardizbanian; which played under the name of "Arax". ..

The picnic tables were plentiful, the Armenian food was delicious, from Boeregs to Louleh and chicken kebobs to watermelon and ices. The children were treated to coffee bag races, three legged races, baseball and many other games. DJ Allen provided both background and dancing music. The "Yeraz dance ensemble of St.Sarkis" treated us to a few dancing medleys despite the light rain to complete the picnic.

We like to thank everyone that attended and participated, and hope to see all back next year. We also would like to thank our members, volunteers and their families with out them this event would have not be a success.
