There are some people who would say that he has been unlucky, others might say it is due to the caliber of his opponents. He himself would say that it is due to his complete lack of talent in the sport.
I'm a 23 Year old computer scientist from Dublin. I've been fencing since I was a wee lad, introduced into the sport along with all the boys in the family by my father, John Bouchier-Hayes.
I (mis)spent my school years in St Conleths College, in Ballsbridge (again just like the rest of my siblings). It was here that I first learnt to fence, under the watchfull eys of Professor Patrick Duffy, and his wife Shirly Duffy.
I continued learning the art in Salle Duffy, and then in Balinteer fencing club under my father, however it was only when I finished my Leaving Cert and went to Trinity College that my competitive career (and my life in general) took off.
We have here a picture from a few years ago. Notice the bandanna?
This was worn to keep my BIG hair from falling in his face and blinding him during a fight. More recently I realised that a simple hair-cut removes the need for the bandanna completly.
It was in the competitive athmosphere of Dublin University Fencing Club, in Trinity that my fencing matured. I began placing in competitions (here and there) and evertually in my third year in the college I won the South of Ireland sabre competition and things took of from there.
As far as fencing is concerned, I don't actually specialise in any one weapon although the sabre is my best, and the one I've won most titles in over the last few years. In competition I fence all three weapons when possible.
I still fence in Trinity college as a graduate, it's situated
very near where I work and is probably the only club in the
country where I can get a decent bit of sabre fenced.
Also when I get a chance I train with my father.
This is a picture of me in Red Coat gear from a film that I worked on in the summer of 1995, in the Wicklow mountains. The film was "Kidnapped" and my role was basicially to appear
and get beaten up by the star, a role that I was able to play
with great ease, as getting beaten up is what I do best.
On the off chance that you don't belive that I was in a film why not check out his page on the Internet Movie Data-Base.
Apart from fencing, Paul's intrests include Guiness, science fiction, computers, and childrens cartoons, such as Pinky and the Brain, Earthworm Jim, He-Man, Godzilla, and Danger Mouse.
After AGES looking for a job after leaving college I finally found one, in Logica Aldiscon a telecommunications solutions provider, as a software engineer. I've been working here since February 1998, exactly a year!
