General Information

Beijing University of Physical Education whose original name was Beijing Institute of Physical Education and Central Institute of physical Education. Founded on Nov.1, 1953, is one of the major Universities of higher learning in China.

The main task of the University is to train highly-qualified physical education teachers, sports coaches, sports science researchers, physical education administrative personnel, social physical education instructors and other people with professional skills of physical education.

Beijing University of Physical Education, located in a western suburb of Beijing, is a close neighbor of "Yuan Ming Yuan Site Park". Having a beautiful scenery in the shadows of the flourish trees, the campus occupies and area of 70 hectares, with a building area of 160,000 square meters. The University has complete facilities for teaching, training and scientific research. It has totally 15 indoor training Gyms for track and field, swimming, ball games, gymnastics, table tennis, rhythmic gymnastics and over 60 outdoor courts and fields, among which the sports complex with the beauty of construction and 3000 seats for audiences was once the boxing competition building in the 11th Asian Games and now it is also the planned future competition building in the International Games. Attached to the University, there is a scientific research center, an audio-visual education center, a library, and sports information center which create for the University a good academic environment.

With comparatively-complete subjects, the university is the largest of Institutes of Physical education in China. At the present, it includes seven Departments and 24 teaching sections with a faculty of comparatively high academic level, among whom are 197 professors and associate professors and 202 instructors. The University has been authorized to award the Doctoral degree on 3 Majors and to award the Master's degree on 8 subjects.

Since its foundation, the University has attached great importance to the combination of teaching, training and scientific research. Because a "strict and realistic" educational policy has been carried out all through teaching, it has trained a great number of highly-qualified talents of physical education, and more than 20,000 students. In formal national competitions, ther have been altogether 240 students who got the championship, while in formal international competitions, 14 students got the championship with 3 breaking the Asian records.

The university attaches great importance to academic exchanges with other coutries. By 1993, it has established intercollegiate relations with 12 universities and colleges of Japan, the United States, Germany, Australia, Canada, Russia and Korea. It also has friendly ties with the Sports Association of the City Shizoka in Japan. The University has up to 1993 trained over 200 international students in its short-term training programs. There were about 100 international student at the university in 1993.

Graduate Department

Graduate Department was founded in 1980. In 1993, there were 75 students studying for their doctor's doctoral or master's degree , and 15 visiting scholars from mainland and abroad. Some students studying for Master's degree are also taking additional courses here.

From 1989, Graduate Department has recruited cadres from National and Beijing Municipal Committee of sports and physical education who take training courses and graduate courses with a Master's degree. From 1991, along with Tianjin Institute of Physical Education and Guangxhou Institute of Physical Education, it has opened training courses of Master's degree for students nation wide.

Beijing University of Physical Education began to cultivate graduate students in 1954 and students with certain academic degree in 1981. Altogether more than 600 graduate students have been granted degrees. (Two of them are international students)

Recently, after inspection and assessment, the National Education Committee has given fully worthy recognition for the cultivation of graduate students Beijing U of P.E, regarding its facilities, quality and management. It has also granted the University a permission for wider enrolling scale.

Physical Education Department

Being the largest in scale, the Physical Education Department of Beijing University of Physical Education has 900 students. Its specialized subject is physical education, mainly training physical education teacher, social sports directors as well as physical science research and management personnel who will engage in sports teaching in schools in industrial and mining enterprises, in sports associations and other forms of wellness activities. After passing the national entrance examination, students have access to our University and can be issued Bachelor of Education when they graduate.

Through four-year study of pedagogy, sports psychology, anatomy, sports physiology and courses like track and field, gymnastics, ball game playing and swimming, students can skillfully master the basic theory, knowledge and technical ability of physical education and are qualified for physical teaching and directive work in sparetime sports training and recreational activities.

Sports Training Department

The sports Training Department mainly trains coaches, special training course teachers and scientific researchers for sports training practice and scientific research. Its specific subject is sports training, including track and field, gymnastics, acrobatics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, judo, boxing and fencing, etc. It normally has 500 students, who are enrolled independently in advance of the annual national entrance examination and can be awarded Bachelor of Education when they graduate.

Through the study of courses like sports training, sports psychology, sports anatomy, sports physiology and the theory and technique study of one's specialized event, students can systematically master the basic theory and method of sports training and the basic theory and technique of their specific event. After graduation, our students are qualified for sports training and scientific research work.

WUSHU Department

Wushu Department is to cultivate special personnel for wushu teaching , coaching and research. Its teaching program covers a four-year term for bachelor's degree and a two-year term academic courses. Nearly two hundred students are studying in Wushu Department for bachelor's degree. It offers various characterized courses such as Wushu, Basic Wushu theory, Chinese Wushu History, Theory of internal Yangsheng Exercise, etc. Besides the courses mentioned above, students must take other courses similar to those of Sports, Training Dept. Wushu Department recruits students before the other departments and can grant the degree for Bachelor of Education. Wushu Dept. Has undertaken the research and arrangement of the essence of Chinese Wushu culture, and has steadily developed Chinese Wushu.

in accordance with the present reform and opening policy, Wushu Dept. Has carried out frequently exchange programs. One hundred and forty-four teachers or students have been sent to twelve countries of five continents to teach Chinese Wushu. And more than ten thousand international students came to learn and exchange martial arts. Wushu Dept. Holds yearly World Exhibition of Wushu, Taiji and Daoyin Yangsheng Gong. Wushu schools and teaching and training centers were founded in Shandong Province and Henan Province.

Sports Adminstration Department

Sports Administration Department is specialized in training specific personnel for sports administration and its theoretical research work. Its specialized subject is sports administration. It has more than 100 students who are required to take part in the national entrance examination and enrolled according to the standard of key colleges and universities of science and engineering. When they graduate, the are awarded Bachelor of Education.

Through four-year study of sports administration, operational research, sports administration psychology, sports information, computer as well as the study of sports knowledge and techniques, our students can have a broad knowledge of scientific and social science. They can also master the basic theories, techniques and methods of contemporary sports administration. They are also qualified for sports administration and research work of relevant theories.

Sports School for Young Athletes

The Sports School for Young Athletes was founded in October, 1979. Its main task is to train excellent athletes with both high sports sills and knowledge of science and culture as national reserve force for Olympic Games. "Studying and training, both of equal importance" is the school teaching policy. The school recruits students from the whole nation.

The Sports School offers thirteen training courses, including track and field, gymnastics, swimming, hockey, weightlifting, fencing, judo, wrestling, rhythmic gymnastics, wushu, acrobatics, boxing and soft tennis.

For more than ten years since its foundation, the school has trained a great number of excellent athletes, such as Li Jing, Jin Ling, Zhou Tianhua, Jiang Yefei, Guo Shasha, etc. And a great achievement had been made both in major domestic and international competitions: there have been seven students winning the World Championship, eight students winning places from 2nd to 6th in World Championships, six students broke Asian records; nine athletes winning Asian Championship, five athletes broke national records and 52 winning national Championship. Besides, there are 15 qualified international master class athletes and 159 qualified national class athletes.

Adult Education Department

In 1988, our correspondence department and department for advanced studies were consolidated and renamed Adult Education /department, Its school system includes correspondence course on sports training (three years), correspondence undergraduate course on physical education (three years), correspondence sports administration training course (three years), undergraduate study after training school learning (two years), teaching assistant training course (one year), correspondence advanced course for young teachers(one year and half), and advanced studies for students who join the class in the middle of the course.

In our University, importance has always been attached to adult education. Correspondence department was set up in 1960. In spite of the above-mentioned school system, other kind of courses like training course for coaches, for personnel in aid of foreign countries, cadres from Commission and sports teachers were also provided. Some Worldwide-famous athletes like Li Furong, Cao Huiying, Xu Haifeng, Gao Min and Xu Genbao have all studied at our University.

Our correspondence department has also set up 27 correspondence centers in Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Shan Xi, Guang Xi, Hu Nan and Qing Hai. All of these centers began to enroll students nationwide since 1993. This will make our adult education work enter a new stage.

Exercise Science Department

Exercise Science Department , founded in 1958, is a unique department of Beijing University of Physical Education. It aims at training special personnel for teaching and research on sports biological science, It has two specialties: sports Biological Science and Sports Fitness and Recovery which are categorixed to human body science. Now more than 250 students are enrooed. Students must take the National entrance Examination and are chosen according to the enrolling score for Science and Engineering Universities and Colleges. Qualified students are granted the degree of Bachelor of Science.

Through the study of biology, anatomy, physiology, genetics, pathology, fitness-keeping and recovery (theory of Chinese traditional medicine), and recovery psychology, students are required to master the basic theory of pedagogic science, sports science, human body science, hygiene and health, and recovery medicine. That is to say, they should systematically grasp the basic theories and practice of sports biological science to meet the requirements of work such as teaching, research, health and rehabilitation practice.

Most of the students graduated from this department work at sports science research Institutes, sports training center, etc.

Research and Research Center

Great progress has been made in scientific research in the recent years in Beijing University of Physical Education. And the total actual strength of scientific research of the University exceeds all of the others in national Physical education system. The University, in recent years, has actively organized teachers participating in various academic exchanges both domestic and international. 4 people attended the 23rd-25th Olympics Scientific Conference. Since the 9th Asian Games, the University began to participate in the Asian Games science meeting and 47 articles were selected and 2 articles were listed as key speeches in the 11th Asian Games. A scientific research team has been formed from both full-time research staff and other teaching and coaching staff.

scentific Research Center is consisted of 49 laboratories, a report hall with 200 seats and a multi-function training hall. The laboratories of this center are equipped with over 100 advanced apparatus and installations, such as BIODEX system. All these meet the requirements of the research on various topics at different levels. This Center offers a lot of services in psychological, physiological and technical assessment for our national teams and athletes.

Journal of Physical Education in Chinese Schools

The "Physical Education in Chinese Schools" , a magazine jointly run by the National Education Commission and National Sports and Physical Education Committee, is edited and distributed by Beijing University of Physical Education. It is a magazine which is very well liked by P.E teachers all over the nation. Most of the readers are elementary and high school P.E teachers.
