OK, this is the chart explaining in very simple English how the ratings are tallied. Perfectly plain to me, how 'bout you?

GROUP III | 15 | 2 C's and 2 D's and 2 E's or higher -OR- 4 D's and 4 E's or higher | 2 C's and 2 D's or higher in the top 8 -OR- 4 D's or higher in top 8 | 1st place = C / 2nd & 3rd = D / 4th - 6th = E | |
Group III - A | 64 | 24 D's and 12 E's or higher | 4 D's in top 8 and 4 E's or higher in top 12 | 1st - 4th = C / 5th - 8th = D / 9th - 16 = E | |

And THIS is how it works.........
EXAMPLE; A competition has 54 entrants, not enough to make it an A event. There are 3 B rated fencers, 6 C rated fencers and 4 D rated fencers, which could bump up the event for Group II . BUT only 1 B, 3 C's and 2 D's finish in the top 8, so the result is a Group III event. Nuts, huh? It's all about the number of rated fencers who enter AND the number of rated ffencers that finish in the top spots........
