The History of Gymnastics

The sport of gymnastics originated in ancient Greece. The word "gymnastics" came from the word "gymnazein", which meant "exercising without clothes". Gymnastics as we know it began in Sweeden during the beginning of the 1800's. Germany and Czechosovakia developed the event apparatus around the same time as well. Gymnastics became very popular, and the sport quickly spread throughout Europe.
