NFL Super Bowl XXXVI
Patriots upset Rams with last second kick, 20-17
by Carlos Curro (February 4th, 2002)

With seven seconds left in the game, kicker Adam Vinatieri of the New England Patriots entered the field and faced the most important moment of his career.

Seven seconds later, he and his teammates were celebrating the franchise first Super Bowl title.

Vinatieri had just converted a 48-yard field goal, right down the middle. A perfect kick. Patriots won, 20-17.

On the other side of the field, the heavily favourite St. Louis Rams couldn't believe their eyes. No time left on the clock for another comeback.

The Rams very powerful offense was shutdown all day long, but they managed to tie the game with 1:30 left in the 4th quarter, after a 26-yard TD pass from QB Kurt Warner to WR Ricky Proehl.

The problem happend in the next series: their defense couldn't hold QB Tom Brady and his receivers, who moved - with no timeouts left - from their own 17-yard line to set-up Vinatieri winning kick.

Brady was 5 of 8 on the drive, but the three incompletions were spike balls to stop the clock. He was right on the money, and won the Super Bowl MVP award afterwards.

Warner, the league's regular season MVP, had a game he'd rather forget. He threw two costly interceptions, one of them returned for a TD by CB Ty Law early in the second quarter.

After opening the scoring with a 50-yd field goal by Jeff Wilnkins in the first quarter, the Rams were shut down through the second and third. When the fourth quarter started, they were behind 17-3.

They managed to tie the game, but their late comeback came in too late. New England held the ball last.

It was a memorable game, with heroes and an incredible finish. The Patriots, underdogs, showed a lot of heart and will to win. Super Bowl XXXVI is certainly a game for the ages.

FANTASY FOOTBALL 2001
Travelers in big slump, worst season ever; Heroes officially out of the playoffs
arrow.gif Well, I can't say I wasn't expecting it to happen, but it is sad, nevertheless. Both of my Fantasy Football teams this year, the Sao Paulo Travelers (playing at Sandbox's Full Contact) and the Sao Paulo Heroes (at SportsLine Fantasy Football), have now absolutely no chances whatsoever of winning in their respective leagues.

That's very bad news, of course. Altough I didn't have time to coach my team the way I wanted, I take full responsability for the bad campaigns. It's fair to remind you that the Sao Paulo Travelers are a two-time league winner in Full Contact - one of them with an undefeated season. But, that's way back in the past...

Let's hope next year I'll do better and lead my teams back to the top.
