It was a long skate back to the bench - probably my longest
ever. The first shoot-out in Olympic hockey history had just
begun. We were playing the Germans in the quarterfinals.
If we lost this game, we could kiss our medal hopes good-bye. I
was the first shooter for Team Canada...and I'd just missed.
It was a sick feeling. Not only do you feel that you've let your
team down, but you've let your country down. The TV cameras
are all focused on your face. You can feel it. As you get to the
bench, it's as if you've got a skin disease. All the players move
away. No one's around you because they don't know what to say.
What are they going to say? "Nice try?"
