You have the option of adding another 5 miles going around Tuscarora Reservoir with nice views of the lake. Click zoom out to see this route.
To expand on the map view click on "zoom out" to get your bearings.(tags labeled 1-3 identify the route direction). One of my favorites.
Start from Green Lakes and cross over to the canal towpath from the wooden bridge directly across from the north entrance on Rt. 290 . Head east (right) on the canal past Pools Brook Road and continue another 1/2 mile and cross over the next bridge on your right to Old Erie Canal Park (This bridge is identified as #1 on the course detail map). Run through the park west and right on Andrus Rd. until Pools Brook Road and then left until it ends at Kinderhook Rd. Follow Kinderhook to the right (identified as #2 on the map), (west) and Rt. 290 briefly until Kirkville Rd and take a right (north - identified as #3) . Hook up again on the canal and back to the park.
Now for some off road stuff. Take the trail behind the park office and up the grassy hill (Symphony Hill if you are familiar with green lakes workouts - Remember when the Syracuse Symphony used to perform there)? At the top of the hill , bear right and follow the Rolling Hills Trail to the Rolling Hills Campground. The park has designated these trails with yellow markers. Near the southern most point locate camp sites 96, 98 and just behind it is the intersection of 2 trails. Take the trail heading south, again with yellow markings, (Melody Lane again if you are familiar) into the upper fields (The Seringetti) "the Farmers Hill Trail from the park map". The Melody Lane trail winds through moderate to old growth forest on its south end.
This area of the park, The Seringetti, is one of my favorites. Most of the terrain here is moderately flat with trails through uncut fields. Since the park has many trees, this area provides a nice option in a very different habitat. The Overlook Trail (northwest) provides nice sweeping views on the escarpment overlooking the canal to Oneida Lake for many miles north and west. Spend some time up here and then head back down Melody.
If you are looking for a flat run with minimal traffic, try parking your car at the intersection of Oran Delphi Rd. and Delphi Road. Head East on Delphi Rd and then North at the next (left) on Pompey Hollow Rd. Continue North and cross back over on Tracy Rd. back to Oran Delphi and home.
Pompey Hollow has low traffic and continues all the way to Rt. 92 with several cross-over options.
Tuesday nights during the summer months (look for dates) we
meet at 5:45 on the track South of the High School.
Two different courses are offered: a 5 and 10K both starting and
ending at the track. The 10k is a challenging route marked on the map at
starting (labeled H=home) with tags labeled H,1-9,H. The 5k follows tags
H,1-7,H.
