The second level in Ireland was formed in 1985-86 - 6 new clubs (Bray Wanderers, Derry City, Cobh Ramblers, Newcastle United, Monaghan United and EMFA) were elected to the league that year and formed a 10-team division with the bottom 4 (Sligo Rovers, Longford Town, Drogheda United and Finn Harps) of the 1984-85 championship (first level). NOTES: Londonderry is situated in Northern Ireland but the team plays in Ireland anyway because the town "belongs" to the Republic Ireland in football terms. Newcastle United changed name to Newcastlewest after the 1985/86-season. EMFA changed name to Kilkenny City after the 1987/88-season. Limerick City changed name to Limerick FC after the 1993/94-season and then to Limerick 37 FC after the 2006-season. Home Farm changed name to Home Farm Everton after the 1994/95-season. The replayed match Kilkenny vs Limerick during the 1999/2000 counted as 3-2 (original score; ordered replay finished 1-0 but was later ruled void by civil judge). Home Farm Everton changed name to Home Farm Fingal in the year 2000 and then to Dublin City 2001. Waterford United had three points deducted during the 2001/02-season for fielding an ineligible player. Monaghan United had three points deducted during the 2003-season for fielding an ineligible player. Athlone Town & Monaghan United each had three points deducted during the 2004-season for fielding ineligible players. Shamrock Rovers had three points deducted during the 2006-season for fielding a suspended player in a game.
