GREGORY LENARD LLOYD WAS A 6th ROUND DRAFT PICK IN 1987 FROM FORT VALLEY STATE.  HE WAS BORN MAY 26, 1965 IN MIAMI, FLORIDA.  WHILE AT FORT VALLEY STATE, HE WAS NAMED IN 1986 DIVISION II DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, TEAM CAPTAIN, 3 TIME MVP, 3 TIME ALL-SIAC, TEAM'S TOP TACKLER LAST TWO SEASONS, FINISHING HIS CAREER  AT FORT VALLEY STATE WITH 362 TACKLES, 32 QUARTERBACK SACKS, 6 INTS, 4 FUMBLES RECOVERED.  HE PLAYED TWO YEARS OF BASEBALL AS OUTFIELDER AND PITCHER.  HE MAJORED IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING.  HE WENT TO HIGHSCHOOL IN FORT VALLEY, GEORGIA, WHERE HE GRADUATED 28th IN A CLASS OF 250 AT PERRY COUNTY HIGH.

HE'S PRO CAREER STARTED WITH GREG MISSING HE'S ROOKIE SEASON AND HALF OF HIS 2nd YEAR WITH KNEE INJURIES.  AFTER THAT HE BECAME THE DOMINANT PLAYER WE KNOW TODAY.  IN 1988 HE WAS THE RECIPIENT OF THE ED BLOCK COURAGE AWARD.  HE IS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE MOST DOMINANT LINEBACKERS OF THIS DECADE.  HE IS A 2-TIME TEAM MVP, AND WITH THE STEELERS HE HAD 53 1/2 CAREER SACKS, FOURTH IN STEELER HISTORY AND MOST BY A LINEBACKER.  LLOYD WAS A FIVE TIME PRO-BOWLER FROM 1991-1995.  HE IS RANKED BY NFL FILMS AS 14th ON THERE ALL-TIME LIST OF NFL'S TOUGHEST PLAYERS.  IN LLOYD'S 9 YEAR CAREER WITH THE STEELERS HE HAS BEEN PLAGUED WITH INJURIES.  IN 1996 HE HAD TO UNDERGO KNEE SURGEY AGAIN TO REPAIR A TORN PATELLAR TENDON IN HIS LEFT KNEE.  THIS PAST 1997, LLOYD MISSED THE LAST 4 GAMES AND PITTSBURGH'S 2 PLAYOFF GAMES WITH A STAPH INFECTION IN HIS KNEE.
 
IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT IN TODAY'S GAME WITH THE FREE-AGENCY, PLAYERS LIKE GREG LLOYD MUST SOMETIMES BE RELEASED TO HELP STAY UNDER THE SALARY CAP AND SO THEY CAN USE THAT MONEY TO PICK UP FREE AGENTS.  EVEN THOUGH THOSE AGING PLAYERS STILL HAVE 2 OR 3 GOOD SEASONS LEFT IN THEM.
