From the Berks County Referee's Association
Each year all the referees of Berks County vote on ALL the schools in Berks County for a Sportsmanship Award. Hamburg Jr. High won the "Junior High Sportsmanship Award" this year! Winning the "Varsity Sportsmanship Award" was Wilson High. It is a great honor for Hamburg to have been chosen for this award.

As I think back at what we have accomplished this year as a supporter of Hamburg Wrestlers, I would like to say that we can all be proud of the efforts that everyone has put forth on behalf of the Mat Club. Our three major tournaments went very well this year. Our first event was the Jr. High Tournament. This tournament went as well as any of them, and to top everything off, our very own Jr. High team won top honors in the Team Championship by two points over Brandywine Heights. The Hamburg Youth Tournament is our biggest fund-raiser of the year. Although the number of entries was lower than last year, we still had a very successful tournament. The last of the Tournaments is the PIAA District III Section III High School Wrestling Tournament. This two-day event features 12 Berks County AA schools. We have had this event for three years now and we just keep improving it every year. I would like to say to everyone involved GREAT JOB. We received so many positive comments from the coaches. They know that we, the members of the Hawks Mat Club, can run a first class event. As you know, the Mat club has always supported our wrestlers from elementary, to Jr. High and then right through High School. We hold these events as our way of raising the monies that we need to do what we want to do. We also receive donations from the businesses in our programs, so please support them whenever possible. This year the Mat Club purchased two new electronic scales, new singlets for our Jr. High team and the awards that are being presented at [this year's] banquet. I can only hope that we show our continued support for all of our wrestlers in the future, and I would like to thank all of the wrestlers for putting in the effort that is required to do as well as you all do. Thank you, Jeffery John Shaffer Treasurer Hawks Mat Club
January 19, 1999 -- I can only say THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU! Now that the 1999 Youth Tournament is completed I have to sit back and reflect on all the help that was needed to complete the running of a first class tournament. I will say that I received a lot of positive comments about how well we run our tournament and that is a reflection of all the good Mat Club members that we have helping.
I would like to say thank you to some individuals that put an all-out effort into the running of this tournament. Randy Wert and his son, Stefan, got it all started by listing it on our web site and then having the registration form put on the site for easy access. Kerry Page and his family handled all the program ads and sales. Kerry and his son, Anthony, also ran our 50/50 drawing during the course of the day. Dan Frick put together a very well qualified list of volunteers to work the tables, keeping score and making sure that the on-deck wrestlers were ready to go when called. To those who worked at these tables, thank you; we did not receive one complaint concerning that aspect of the tournament. You know who you are. Kevin Reinhart took care of organizing the help for setting up the event and then making sure everything got back to the school afterwards. Thank you to everyone who helped out on Saturday night and Sunday evening.
Adrian Strahn took care of the trophies once again this year and the people were very pleased with the quality of the awards. Randy Shappell, Ralph Shappell, Al Dautrich, Randy Heckman, Troy Strausser, Randy Rollman, and Kevin Simpson all took care of the weigh-ins and handling of the registration forms. There were no problems there, either. Good job guys! Russ and Mary Alice Kuhns and Dawn Stabile handled all of the chores of running the kitchen. This included running for the food, setting up and cleaning up, and we most definitely cannot forget Jack Thomas. Jack has been collecting admissions at the door for so many years that some of the people from out of the area will soon know him personally.
Once the tournament started in the morning, all the credit of keeping it running smoothly belongs to the head table workers. Ron Stabile and Dave Best were the announcers, David Strausser, Kevin Simpson, and Ben Scheffler were right there keeping those bout sheets moving and bracket sheets updated. Our very own elementary and Junior High wrestlers kept those bout sheets going to the tables so we could keep going and finish this tournament in good time.
I personally would like to say THANK YOU to my daughter, Stacey Shaffer, for doing all of the wall charts, bout sheets and seeding at home before the tournament even started. Stacey also updated the wall charts the day of the tournament and the winners got to take home a very orderly bracket chart to remember this tournament. I would also like to thank the rest of my family for putting up with my mood swings in the preceding week leading up to the tournament. A lot of phone calls will do that to a person.
In closing, I would like to say THANK YOU to all of the wrestlers who participated in this tournament and for putting all the effort that is required into this great sport. Without your participation, we adults wouldn't know what to do with all of our spare time. Good Luck in the future and keep supporting your Hawks Mat Club.
Your Tournament Director, Jeffery John Shaffer
Dawn and I would like to thank everyone that helped at the Hamburg Youth Tournament on Sunday, January 17th. From the super, all helpful, going beyond-the-call-of-duty parents right down to the fantastic kids. Thanks for helping set up the kitchen Saturday. We couldn't have had the all-day marathon Sunday without all of you. We really appreciate every one of you!! Thanks for all the soups, barbecue, pre-cooked eggs, and the many wonderful desserts. Because of all of you, the kitchen did extremely well this year.
The proceeds from this event will help support all wrestling programs at Hamburg. The Hamburg Mat Club, and your kids, appreciate your involvement. Many heart-filled THANKS!!

The Starter jacket Coach Strahn found after one of the youth practices last season has not found its owner. It's collecting dust and Coach Strahn is thinking of donating it to one of his favorite charities, ME (too bad it doesn't fit)! Please come and take me home!
Also, the Pooh Bear watch has not been claimed. Come and get them!
