Eckville was named after Arthur E.T. Eckford
who immigrated from Dublin, Ireland in 1902. Eckville
was incorporated as a village in 1921 and
became a Town in 1966. The rich farmland surrounding
Eckville was homesteaded in the early 1900’s
by settlers from all corners of the world, particularly
Finland and Estonia. In the mid 1960’s Eckville
experience rapid growth when oil and gas were
discovered in the area. Today, this prosperous
growing community, with a trading area of 7,000
residents, is the centre for agriculture,
petroleum, forestry, manufacturing and construction. Major
industrial facilities include a machining
and welding shop, lumber yard and gravel. Some manufactured
goods include campers/camperettes/truck canopies,
feed, honey and lumber. The Town has a population
of 889 with 50% in the working age group,
28% children and teenagers and 22% retirement age. The
housing market is competitive and very reasonably
priced in comparison to larger centres. Standard
residential real estate costs are $80,000
with an annual tax average of $1,200.
Eckville offers the visitor and resident alike,
a full range of retail businesses, shopping, restaurants,
public services, banks, excellent sporting
facilities, tennis/basketball court, a community centre,
seniors’ friendship centre, seniors lodge
and golf courses, to name a few. Clubs include
Beavers/Cubs/Scouts (co-ed), 4-H horse and
beef, snowmobile club, Legion, Lions and Kinsmen. Within
easy access of Eckville are major lakes, trout
ponds, campgrounds and golf courses as well as an
excellent sky diving zone. Annual events included
the winter carnival, rodeo, 4-H calf sale, curling
bonspiels, hockey, golfing, baseball and slow
pitch tournaments, Ukrainian New Years celebration,
Robbie Burns night. Welcome to our small town
with the big town amenities.
