Who is Mabio Costa?
Mabio is a Lower Extremity Single Below Knee Amputee Category (Left leg).
Mabio was a Competitive Swimmer at the age eight. As a Swimmer He Represented Brazil in Many International Competitions including the 1986 Pan American Games where he got 2 Medals (Puerto Rico). In 1987 in the First International Swim Competition he Got 5 Medals (California, USA). 1990 besides being the Brazilian Team Coach in the South American Swimming Championship (Argentina), he also got Gold Medal in 50m Free, 100m Butterfly, 200m IM, 100m Breaststroke and was World Champion in the Open Sea World Championship.
In 1989, he was the First physically challenged athlete in South America to compete and receive an award in a Triathlon race.
He emigrated from Brazil in 1990 looking for better opportunities in the United States. Mabio decided to move to the US to pursue his Dream of making the Triathlon a World Class sport for Physically Challenged athletes. He saw that ONLY here in the United States where opportunities are given to those who fight for a better future been disabled or not, and mostly where discrimination doesn't exist against the handicapped person, this would be Possible
In the States, he started in Races representing the Achilles Track Club, finishing the 1992 New York City Marathon.
In 1996 He became the International Triathlon Physically Challenged World Champion and Bronze Medallist in The 1998 ITU World Championship.
In June 2001, Mabio Costa realized one of his biggest dreams: “Qualified to represent the United States Triathlon Team”.
In May 2004, he became the first South America athlete to represent and win a World Championship race representing Team USA.
