This past Saturday was another good day for running; It was overcast most of the morning with cool temperatures.

Boys varsity ran Division 2 instead of Division 3 this day. The team took 5th in their race, without their 4th man (Estebes Hernandez) racing this day. Patrick McGrail took 3rd overall (16:49) with Calvo right on his heels (16:50, 4th), as he was the whole race.

Jose soto finished 13th overall with a time of 17:20. He would have finished one place higher and about 5-6 seconds faster if not for the collision he had about 100 yds from the finish with a spectator (5 yr old kid). There was no one to catch as Jose started his kick down the incline right before the finish. No one was close behind him until a small child runs across the course to get to the other side. The kid then sees Jose coming and is bewildered and pretty much stops dead in front of Jose as he is trying to avoid him. Boom! Jose is hit!! He goes down, gets up, has no idea what happened, is momentarily blinded (?), falls again, gets up, has dirt all over him, starts his kick again as people are beginning to pass him now. One guy ends up beating him. In retrospect, it was quite hilarious since no one got hurt, but it really sucks..

Chandler ran 18:39 as the fourth guy and Andy Wang rounded out the top (and only) 5. Rozsa ran the soph race and ran 18:42. next meet on Thursday vs Aarcadia.

Arcadia

@ Arcadia County Park 10/8/98 Boys varsity won 24 -32 Mcgrail 16:38 (2) Calvo 16:57 (3) Soto 17:09 (4) E Hernandez 17:41 (6) Abel Gonzalez of arcadia won the race in 16:12. he and mcgrail battled for the first two miles (10:42) before he threw in several surges to finally get past mcgrail. phil lu won the boys soph-frosh race (18:44), but they lost 38-23. varsity girls won easily 16 - 45. took the first 4 places. fox , sandoval, white finished together at 20:39. mariah was 4th at 20:51. today is another league meet at la canada's course (kenny staub). should be a good race between sm and sp boys varsity. possibly bad blood from the last meeting when sm's #2 runner was accidentally tripped by a sp runner. once again, lc girls should win easily. i believe they are nationally ranked now. stay tuned for upcoming results.

All-League Competition

sp varsity boys ran a strong race and finished second (50 pts), edging out arch rival sm (61 pts) and behind lc (23 pts). patrick mcgrail ran a strong race, staying with the lead pack and outkicking two lc competitors to finish 2nd overall (16:55). rick calvo also ran a strong race, finishing 5th (17:06), ahead of sm's top runner. jose soto outkicked his sm opponent to finish 9th overall in 17:28. james rosza held off a pack of 3 sm runners to finish 13th overall (17:59). andrew e-chandler capped off the scoring with his 21st place finish (18:36), with estebes hernandez close beind (18:45, 25th). a great day for the boys varsity.

the frosh-soph boys rebounded from a 5th place finish in the first league contest to place 2nd in a closely contested race between four teams (lc, sm, and monrovia). they were lead by strong races by frosh phil lu (19:01) and alan reynolds (19:57). this team is basically all frosh and they are getting better with each race.

varsity girls took 2nd in a race that was much closer than expected. strong performances by jessica sandoval (20:50), sarah white (21:01), carley fox (21:24), and mariah e-banwer (21:45) helped them to this showing.

jv girls pretty much dominated their race and took 1st place. lead by elisa morimoto, jennifer morimoto, and dennise warnecke who all finished together with a time of 23:40, with irisa liu closely behind (23:45). this pack assured sp of another victory.

League Finals

League finals was awesome for South Pasadena. Everyone either ran a course PR or an all-time PR.

The Boys varsity edged out San Marino by only 4 points led by a #3 finish by Patrick McGrail and a #5 finish by Rick Calvo. Big Kicks by James Rozsa and Andrew (Berkley)Elliot-Chandler made the victory over the charging Titans. The Boys' Varsity brought home sole possession of 2nd in the Rio Hondo League.

The Girls' Varsity also was second. They were led by PR performances by Jessica Sandoval, Carley Fox, Sarah White, Amanda Raya, and Stephanie Ramirez.

The Girls' JV were league Champs

The B s' Frosh Soph Beat San Marino by 0ne point and LaCanada by 3 to win the meet. Unforunately, in the first meet we were very green and took fifth so La Canada was still the overall League Champs. It was an incredible improvement by our Freshman Class.

CIF Prelims

CIF Prelims were great. The Varsity Boys (Patrick McGrail, Rick Calvo, Estebes Hernandez, Jose Soto, Andrew Elliot-Chandler, James Rozsa, and Phil Lu) came in 5th. The Varsity Girls (Jessica Sandoval, Sarah White, Carley Fox, Stephanie Ramirez, Amanda Raya, Mariah Eccleston-Banwer, Elizabeth Williams) came in 4th. Both teams will be going to CIF Finals at MT. SAC next Saturday!

This was a great race for Estebes Hernandez who came in before Senior Captain Jose Soto, and teammate Andrew Elliot-Chandler. Freshman, Phil Lu ran as an alternate and did very well. The Varsity girls and boys ran a hard race.

Finals will be tough next week, but I have faith in both. Unfortunately, Estebes Hernandez may not be running at Finals do to a very important soccer game. Running with out the newest 3rd man will be a challenge. All in all, it was an awesome race.
