To be a Goal Keep you must like to
be challenged!
You must defend your goal third
and
any attacking player within it,
especially the Goal Shoot.
You are responsible for taking
throw-ins along the bottom
goal line
and half way up sidelines in goal
third.
To be a Goal Keep, you need
anticipation, interception,
and
rebounding skills plus lots of one on
one defence.
*
To improve your game in this
position you need: * Good ball handling skills,
especially throwing accurately over a
long distance
* Wide vision, so you can see the
whole picture on court
* Fast footwork.
Do short, sharp
sprints to develop this
* Balance. Get someone to throw the
ball to you to practise balance off
fast footwork
* Develop the courage and
determination to go and attack the
ball outside the goal circle
* Play to enjoy the game - if there is
no enjoyment then it is not worth it
* Develop good understanding and communication with
your goal defence and outside circle defence * Learn to move your feet. * Work hard on passing skills so that you can be useful
on attack. * Whole goal third is your responsibility, not just the
goal circle. * During a game focus on the task at hand and keep
your mind in the present.
* Treat the opposition with respect.
They have qualities
and abilities that will work you hard.
Do plenty of
forward/backward movement, crossovers, side
movements,
elevation work and angling of body. Move
quickly from one movement to the other.
Emphasise
body balance and quick change of direction.
Strengthen both sides of your body, develop
variety and passing length.
Work with and understand the role of
everyone who is able to play in that third.
Play each ball as it comes and
work one goal at a time.
Relax and have faith in your own
ability and that of your team.
