HOMETOWN HERO DAVIS CAPTURES MVP

Terrell Davis, running back for the Denver Broncos, was selected the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXII by a panel of media, announced following the Broncos' 31-24 win over Green Bay.

"I'm numb right now," Davis said after the game. "I can't reflect on my game. It's going to take a while for this to set in."

Davis rushed for 157 yards on 30 carries for a 5.2 yard average and three touchdowns. He also caught two passes for eight yards.

"In my book he's the best running back in the league, bar none," quarterback John Elway said. "He showed it again tonight. He's always breaking tackles and he's always going north and south."

The Most Valuable Player will receive the Pete Rozelle Trophy and a Ford automobile at an 8:30 a.m. news conference Monday morning at the Super Bowl Media Center.

Davis grew up in the San Diego area, playing high school football at Lincoln High School - where he recently had his jersey retired.

"I planned it like that," Davis said. "No. No, all I wanted to do was come out and play well. Do what I do well and run the ball hard. Our line did a great job. All I had to do was run. My job was easy."

Getting the running game going was the Broncos' top priority heading into Super Bowl XXXII. Thanks to Terrell Davis, Denver did just that, as he ran roughshod over the Green Bay Packers for 157 yards to help the Broncos earn a hard-fought 31-24 victory at Qualcomm Stadium. "I replayed the game in my head all week," said Davis, who was selected the game's MVP after scoring 3 TDs. "You have to think like that. There was no doubt in my mind we would win this game." The game was still in doubt, however, after Davis scored on a 1-yard plunge with 1:45 remaining. But LB John Mobley made sure his team's score would be the game's last, as he knocked down Brett Favre's fourth-down pass with 28 seconds left. "When Brett (Favre's) pass fell incomplete, I couldn't believe it," QB John Elway said. "(Winning the Super Bowl) is better than I ever thought it would be."
