Duane Vandenbusche Dr Duane Vandenbusche, head coach of the Western State College Men's and women's cross country teams and the women's track and field team, has coached the men for 25 years and the women for 15 years. Vandenbusche started the women's cross country team and track and field teams in the 1982-83 season. During his 15 year tenure with the women, Western State College has won a national Championship in cross country and has never finished out of the top 10 at Nationals for cross country. He has developed 3 individual national champions in cross country, including Tuma Urio and current US cross country team member Elva Dryer who won the title twice while at Western. Since 1992, Western State's women have never finished out of the top 3 teams in the NCAA Division II cross country championships. In women's track and feild, Western State has had 51 All-Americans, 21 individual national titles and has consistently been in the top 10 in the nation.

The Western State men's cross country teams under Coach Vandenbusche have won two national championships, the latest in 1995. The men have had 47 All-Americans in cross country and have consistantly been one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the nation. Coach Vandenbusche also coaches the distance runners in track and field where his runners have won many individual titles. Coach Vandenbusche has been named national coach of the year 3 times and regional and conference coach of the year many times.
