Dear Fellow Supporters,
Dan and I hope you enjoyed the first ever football supporters programme of the Latics Supporters Club. As it was such an historic occasion we have decided to include the front cover from the first ever Latics First Division programme against Newcastle United. Hope you enjoy it. We hope to include similar looks back into history to keep you informed about your favourite team and introduce you to current and past players.
Thanks for all the suggestions as to future inclusions. We hope to use them all.
The Chairman
Some members have been arriving late to the meetings and the Chairman regrets that attendance will only be accepted up to 7-00pm (unless he's still there - but no guarantee) as Mrs. Chairman wants him home and he loves her very much.
NOW WE CAN CONCENTRATE ON PROMOTION? So goes the age old saying. Swindon is history. Unfortunately the lads are not in too good a position that we can say that with a lot of confidence. A look at the league positions verifies that we are having a torrid time at present. Sitting seventh from bottom (I hate counting from the bottom) one point behind Tranmere, with two games in hand, we need to string a few wins together to edge our way up the league. Last Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Charlton did not help. We must accept that promotion is out of the question for this season and need to start building a team that can make a realistic challenge for next season. New players have been signed but immediate impact in improved results is not noticeable. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for a good run.
COME ON YOU BLUES!
Did you know?
Roger Palmer (the Dodger), who left the club in 1994, created a club record by netting 156 times in all competitions. Of that, 141 goals were registered in league games for the Latics. The Chairman was there on the night he broke the record.
The scoring record had previously been held by Eric Gemmill who scored 110 league goals between 1947 and 1954. Eric was, coincidentally, also there on the night Roger broke the record. Oooooh! Roger Palmer.
A few years ago two Latics supporters, arriving rather early for the Port Vale away game, approached one of the Burslem car park attendants when they couldn’t find a pub. 'Do you know of any good boozers round here mate?" they asked. "Aye" he replied, "you’re looking at one!."
Today's cover photo shows Athletic's Norwegian international Gunner Halle, one of the small army of players from the English League who performed so well in the last world cup finals in the U. S.A. Gunner was only 20 when he made his full international debut and has now won about 50 caps. He was playing for Lillestrom when Oldham signed him for $560,000 in January 1991. Now he is a firm favourite with the Boundary Park faithful.
