First off I think you need to correct your stats. Charles Woodson does not lead the nation in INTs, Brian Lee of Wyoming does. He has 8 and has returned 1 for a TD. Cedric Donaldson of LSU is among 5 players tied with Woodson with 7, except he has 2 TD re urns. Speaking of punt returns Omarr Smith of San Jose State has a return average of 11.18 yard per return, 22 returns 246 yards 1 touchdown. Woodson averages only 8.58 yards per return. Did I mention Smith also has 7 picks? Okay now on to the only real eisman trophy contender, Peyton Manning. How many records does Woodson hold (Conference, School, NCAA)? Peyton's got 32. I would also like to point out that Peyton has more rushing touchdowns than Woodson this year. Next year, HEISjerMAiNe Copeland. This guy is 10 times better than CW. He came to Tennessee as a WR/DB. To help out the team, he became the second team QB (2 years ago) behind Manning. He is a tremendous option QB. He served as the backup QB last year, as a reserve WR, and PR. With Peyt's decision to stay, Tee Martin became the full time back up QB, and Jermaine moved to full time split end with the departure of Joey Kent. Jermaine has established himself as one of Manning's favorite targets. Jermaine can catch the ball in traffic and DRAG three or more defenders, that are hanging onto him, an extra 5 to 10 yards. He has tremendous leaping ability, can run through tackles, and has great hands. He is 100 times better an athlete than Charles Woo son will ever dream of achieving.

Hey, Charles, remember that touchdown I scored on you? You were twisting all around trying to find the ball, so I turned around and showed it to you as I went into the end zone. You aren't really that good a cornerback. You have some interceptions beca se Big 10 quarterbacks suck (that guy at MSU got picked off trying to throw the ball out of bounds!) Wow, it must be really tough for you to know that you have NO chance of winning. Dear Charles, I am a Michigan fan and have been since I was a little kid. I think my favorite game was last years bowl loss to Alabama when we were embarrased by a team from a superior league. It was shocking that a no talent league like the SEC would go 6-0 over ll in bowls and 3-0 versus a better league like the bIG-10. Were you suprised that we were beaten by a team with Freddie Kitchens at quarterback. I thought through the whole game "I'm glad we aren't playing against Danny Wurfell or Peyton Manning or we ould be humiliated". 1+1=2, 2+2=4, as in 4GET the Heisman, if you can manipulate such an advertising campaign for yourself while still in school, become a media hype machine and start your own advertising agency. Best passing offense he has faced is #30 Ohio State. You haven't returned an INT for a TD. You do not even rank in the top 50 punt returners. You don't even return kickoffs. You catch a pass and everyone thinks you are God. The Penn State TD was a bre kdown in coverage and you were not even covered!!! I hate to take the wind out of the Woodson fans' sails, but today I heard the 1947 Heisman winner from Notre Dame (who has a vote)say that he is voting for Manning. All three CBS College Football TV hosts, including Lou Holtz, said the same thing. In fac , two of them said that they were putting Leaf second on their ballots. One said that he thinks ESPN is only touting Woodson because a close race will help the ratings for their awards show. If Holtz, who I never thought gave any SEC school the respect t deserves, realizes that UT played a much tougher schedule that Michigan and that Manning was a greater part of his teams success, then many other voters will too. It's going to be Manning in a landslide.

Here's to Charles Woodson! He's never thought that he was the best player in the land. He's never had the Big 10, ESPN/ABC Rose Bowl machine hyping him 24 hours a day. So go ahead Woodson and the Big 10 propaganda machine; do what you always do-run your mouths and ride the media for all there worth. Try and take away a award for someone who doesn't need "John Doe for Heisman" websites. He does his job with team goals in mind and unlike Mr.Woodson does it with class.

Woodson is over rated on an over rated team in an over rated conference. How many Big10 schools are in the top 25? How many SEC teams? Look at Tennessee schedule and look at Michigan. This makes Peyton Manning's stats look even better. Woodson would not e en make my hiesman ballot. There are other great players out there with real stats to prove it. After seeing the Tenn-Vandy game today I must wander, Would Woodson even be a starter at Vanderbuilt. If the big 10 is for real why dont they join the bowl all ance. Charles is a very talented player, however, talent is nothing unless you can be humble enough to manage it. I have two words as to why Woodson should not win the Heisman, and they're not Peyton Manning, they are Desmond Howard, the last self-hyping UM pl yer to win the award and do nothing with his career after that. Since the beginning of the season, I've been saying Michigan is going to the Rose Bowl. Since week 2 I've been saying they'll be #1. I took alot of Slack but I was RIGHT!!! My husband has been saying Woodson will be the Heisman winner all season. Heck hat Manning guy doesn't play on 3 different teams. My reaction to this web page pretty much follows my reaction to the media hype that has surrounded your being considered for the Heisman; shock and dismay. The Heisman Trophy embodies the "Best" in the college spirit of play. Just so you'll know, that d es not include ego, the amount of money you'll make in the pro's, and the media's desire not to have two southern quarterbacks win the award in back to back years. You're very fortunate to have a good team around you that makes you look good. Please don' confuse that with you're wonderful! You're average on an above average team. This is still a team sport! So, in considering who should win the Heisman I must look at the athlete and what they have done for their team and the college sport of football. I don't see the character, consistancy, or the spirit in Charles Woodson. What I see is hype, ego, and mon y! My vote goes to Peyton Manning for the tremendous character, humility, and passion for the college sport of football. Not to mention the consistant team leadership, passing yardage, 300 yard games, touchdown passes per game/year and overall class. Something that seems to be severely lacking here! This is getting past the point of ridiculous. Your hero, Mr. Woodson, has been getting his all-important interceptions against quarterbacks who would probably be playing backup to Freddie Kitchens of Alabama! You will see how "great" he is when Mr. Leaf l ghts him up for ten or so completions to his side of the field as the Maize 'n Blue go down in flames. They are just another imposter who has gotten by on their weak schedule and weak conference (USA Today computer ratings says so), and Woodson is taking dvantage of the situation. Not since Steve McNair has there been anything like it. Or maybe not since Gordie Lockbaum, who not only played both ways for Holy Cross but actually finished third with as much anti-Heisman vote as there may be. The arguments for Woodson, a big-time, big-name, big-school player, are the same as they were for McNair and Lockbaum, small-school, small-time, small-name players: The Heisman should go to a gimmick. The Heisman is the most celebrated and debated trophy in sports, and often it is given to the wrong person, not that Gino Toretta or Desmond Howard will be giving theirs back. The Heisman is the only award that has its own thermometer. Peyton Manning is up. Peyton Manning is down. Ryan Leaf is rising. Tavian Banks is falling. The NFL has no comparable prize. What would it be, Man of the Year? The Jim Thorpe Trophy? The Bert Bell Award? Just who is the front-runner for the Bell this year? The NBA has the occasional argument about its MVP (the Podoloff Trophy), which ought to be changed to MVPOTMOC, Most Valuable Player Other Than Michael, Of Course. However, I have yet to see anyone, after the winning shot, even Charles Barkley, strike an MVP pose. Does anyone know what the pose looks like? Only the Heisman can, by just the mention of its name, divide or unite or infuriate complete strangers, not so unlike Dennis Rodman in that regard. Halfway through my column on the Michigan-Ohio State game, I am tapped on the shoulder. One of the rules, respected in press boxes everywhere, is no interruptions on deadline, for any reason, pizza, beer and kudos excluded. Michigan curiosity breaks the rule. ``Who has your Heisman vote?'' is the question asked. ``Are you voting for Woodson?'' is the question unasked. My response, absently, between paragraphs, was, ``The quarterback.'' Maybe he thought he heard ``cornerback'' and will include me on his pro-Woodson list. Or maybe assume some quarterback other than Manning. I understand there is one at Washington State. I didn't care to be more clear. The next day, at the Bears game, I find myself arguing against Woodson, someone I had not given a great deal of thought to for the Heisman. Woodson does not play a Heisman position, except maybe once or twice a game. Woodson has to make maybe three big plays for his team, as he did against Ohio State. Not subtracted from this total is the touchdown pass he gave up, nor the other one he would have given up had the pass not been 10 yards over David Boston's head, nor the two passes Boston dropped outright, though Woodson's presence may have had something to do with that. Why do running backs or quarterbacks always win the Heisman? Because they play the most essential positions, snap after snap of the ball. They have the greatest influence on a game, have the most demanded of them and have entire defensive game plans designed to stop them. Randy Moss of Marshall can catch 83 passes for a record-tying 22 touchdowns, and not one of them is worth as much as Woodson's single catch against Ohio State or his touchdown catch against Penn State. Woodson is a contrivance, a very, very good one, but he is not the best player in college football. He gets noticed because he does something other than his job. He catches a pass, returns a kick, once a game, once a month. Woodson has touched the ball 15 times on offense all year. If Woodson is not a good enough cornerback to be voted for the Heisman--and the way all of us watch football will have to change to make that true--then he should not get the Heisman for being an incidental offensive tactic. It's Manning for me, and it should be for the Bears if they have to face the same choice on draft day.

Who desires a candidate who not only excels as a tremendous athlete but also constitutes a remarkable example of the best that college football has to offer on the field, in the classroom, and in the community? Not the type of sports world in which we now live, I fear: one where hype and provincial attitudes override good judgment. I know stats don't mean a lot unless you know the story behind them...but hey- Woodson: Passing: 1-1, 5 yards. Rushing: 3 carries., 15 yards (5 yds/carry), 1 TD. Receiving: 11 rec., 231 yards (21 yds/rec), 2 TD's. Interceptions: 7 int., 7 yds. Hardly Heisman stats - his biggest tangible is INT's and he's tied with about 5 others for that. And you don't award the Heisman for being a threat. Plus, agree or not, character is an issue. And Manning has the most character of any of them, plus the stats to back it up.

I Find it very interesting that ESPN is carrying the Heisman Award Show. What would be better for TV ratings than to make this a controversial issue. I can't believe the public is buying into this ploy by ESPN to boost ratings by promoting Chuckie. Giv me a break! Shame on you ESPN! Don't loose your integrity for the sake of ratings!

2 questions: 1) If Peyton Manning quarterbacked at Michigan ( or Notre Dame, Penn St., etc.) and Woodson played DB at Tennessee, would they still be pushing him for the award. No. In fact it would be Charles who? Can you imagine a QB there with Manni g's numbers NOT winning it. The distinguished and highly informed Beano Cook predicted Ron Powlus would win 2 Heismans at ND. Marcus Nash & Jamal Lewis would be getting Heisman consideration if they played for any of those schools. 2) If it is for "at letic" and "versatility" purposes that Woodson deserves it, then, how does he compare with Hines Ward of Ga. (i.e; does Woodson have 1000 yds each in career passing, recieving, and rushing?)

Woodson is a great player, no doubt. How could he possibly considered as a serious alternative to Peyton Manning? Does Woodson hold any Michigan, Big Ten or National Records? His stats are modest - 7 picks and a couple of kicks returned for touchdowns. Come on people, don't fall for ESPN's "Woodson for Heisman" marketing campaign!

Charles Woodson deserves the Heisman Trophy before any player in College Football. It was proven against Ohio State (interception, reception, and touchdown on punt return), against Penn State (taking Joe Jurevicious out of the game), and then doing the same against Tim Dwight from Iowa. Then quite possibly his best game was against Michigan State wh re he picked off 2 of the 3 passes thrown in his direction. The bottom line is this: Charles Woodson has shown up big in all games and bigger in the big games. Big time players make big time plays and that is exactly what Woodson does. He has a chance to be a mixture of a Deion Sanders and a Rod Woodson (while he was in his prime). CHARLES WOODSON FOR HEISMAN!!!

Well, it looks like there has been just a tad bit of confusion concerning the toughness of Michigan's v\s Tennessee's schedules. Sorry Wolverine fans, but you should just wake up from your little world of denial-Tennessee had the tougher scedule-let's tak a quick look. OK, Michigan played Michigan State, Iowa,and Colorado(oops, none of those teams are anywhere near the top 25 anymore.They weren't too tough.) The only teams Michigan played that are still ranked are Ohio State and Penn State. Now onto Tenne see. Tennessee played Florida(7),UCLA(6),Georgia(14),and Southern Mississippi(23)-all of which are still in the top 25. Ok, now let us compare-4 ranked teams versus 2-seems like 4 would be tougher-as it is-just like Tennessee and PEYTON MANNING. Also some of you seem to think that all the fuss over Peyton is just a sob story, well I hate to tell you that the only time you need to use a sob story is when the person is undeserving ( such is the case with Woodson). Peyton does not need a sob story he has sta s to back up his Heisman win!! All of the Woodson for Heismam hype was just started to keep people interested in the race! I would like to be in Michigan on December 13th so that I can see the looks on all of your faces when Peyton brings the Heisman back to the GREAT state of TENNESSEE!! Go Big Orange!! Charles Woodson is by far the best college football player in the country today. If I were to have a vote in the Heisman Trophy ballot I would place my vote for him. The trophy is supposed to be awarded to the best player in college football not the best ffensive player or the player that can have the best stats. Greatness is not defined by stats but by performances such as the one he had against the Ohio State Buckeyes last Sunday. If he is awarded the Heisman then it really would be a incredible thing s nce it has never been awarded to a full-time defensive player.

If you are deserving of the Heisman Trophy, there are at least 6 DB's in the country that are more deserving. Your personal hype of yourself makes me sick. Your pal Beano never mentions the # of times you get burned. Sure, the touchdowns are great, but if you are getting burned, don't you think you should work more on that and less on offense. You are, after all, listed as a defensive back. Give me a BREAK! Just ask your own coach if he would trade you and Griese for Manning and any DB or Leaf and any DB.
