Roberto Baggio knew as a youngster that he would be a star. He had his first taste as an eight year old boy playing for Caldogno against Liva. A six goal haul was the catalyst for his dream, but it was not until four years after he had graduated into the senior ranks that he debuted with a first division club. That game with Florientina against Sampdoria was the amoungst a number of intermittent appearences, until the season of 1987-88 when he was rewarded with a regular position. |
Roberto Baggio has been described as "one of the greatest talents to ever set foot on a soccer field". Baggio shot to world prominence at Italia '90 when his solo dash and goal against the Czech Republic left spectators around the world awestruck. In 1993 Baggio steered Juventus to superb UEFA Cup victory and in the same year he won the FIFA World Player of the Year Award. At the 1994 World Cup in the USA, Baggio proved Italy's savior on countless occassions. His five goals in three games took Italy to the final, but unfortunately an injured Baggio could not lead the Azzurri to victory. Since then Baggio has been in and out of such sides as AC Milan but is now playing well for Bologna. Roberto Baggio fans all over the world will be hoping he is included in the Italian National Team for France '98. If not the world will miss out on seeing Baggio, one of the greatest names in the sport, competing with other champions from around the globe.
