Sinclair stars as NZ takes control 123 n.o. on debut Mathew Sinclair has become New Zealand's highest scorer on test debut, reaching an unbeaten 123 - and breaking a 70-year-old record along the way - as New Zealand made 263-2 on the first day of the second test against the West Indies at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. The composed performance of the 24-year-old debutant was the dominating feature of play on Boxing Day. Sinclair played with aggression and confidence, at times punishing the West Indian bowlers who frequently, and disappointingly, bowled short of a length. Earlier, West Indies captain Brian Lara won the toss and sent the Black Caps into bat, hoping to take advantage of a pitch described as a "bit green". However, the tourists were unable to take the early wickets they would have hoped for and the Kiwis took advantage of some inconsistent bowling from the West Indians. The Australian-born Sinclair arrived at the crease after the dismissal of opener Gary Stead, caught behind off the bowling of Reon King for 17. Sinclair was then joined by captain Stephen Fleming when Craig Spearman played an ordinary shot straight to Courtney Walsh after compiling a patient 24. Fleming and Sinclair then took control of the first day with a 150-run partnership - scoring at a very healthy rate of four runs an over.Sinclair, reached the 100 milestone after lunch, bringing up his century with a four - one of 12 he collected on his way to 123. With the pitch looking to be full of runs, Fleming threatened to join Sinclair on three figures, but he was caught at square-leg off the bowling of part-time spinner Shivnarine Chanderpaul half an hour before stumps for 67. With Sinclair on 123 and Nathan Astle unbeaten on 4, the Black Caps are in the box seat as they seek to maintain their commanding position on day two. Sun Dec 26 18:12 1999 Internal Links
