Martina sucessfully defended her first title of her career by defeating Conchita Martinez 6-0 6-2 in the Bank of the West Classic final today. It took just 53 minutes for Martina to secure her 50th WTA tour singles win this season.
Conchita Martinez lost to Martina again today in the doubles final. Martina and Lindsay defeated Conchita and Patricia Tarabini (ARG) in straight sets 6-1 6-3.

Saturday 26th July 1997
Martina defeated her doubles partner and the number 4 seed, Lindsay Davenport in three sets 6-3 1-6 6-2. Martina will face Conchita Martinez, the number 6 seed in the final, whom Martina has never beaten before. Conchita holds a 2-0 win-loss record against Martina, but their last match was in the final of the 1996 Italian Open in Rome.
Martina and Lindsay were out on court again today to defeat Elena Likhovtseva (RUS) & Ai Sugiyama (JAP) in straight sets, 6-4 6-4. They will play Conchita Martinez (SPA) & Patricia Tarabini (ARG) the number three seeds, in the final.

Friday 25th July 1997
Martina defeated Linda Wild (USA) in three sets 6-1 6-7 (7-9) 6-3. This was a quarter final match, setting Martina up to play her doubles partner Lindsay Davenport in the semi final. A potential tough match for Martina as Lindsay is a very hard hitter of the ball... but then again, Martina handles pace very well!

Thursday 24th July 1997
Martina and Lindsay Davenport came through their quarter final match by defeating Katie Schlukebir and Julie Scott (USA) easily in straight sets 6-3 6-0.

Wednesday 23rd July 1997
Martina defeated Maleeva Magdalena in straight sets 6-1 6-2. The match lasted just 50 minutes, during which Martina served 6 aces! Martina's match was so routine that she found herself watching the match on the other show court during changeovers. (This is because both the show courts are next to each other, and matches are played on them both at the same time!)

Tuesday 22nd July 1997
Martina is the number one seed in the singles and doubles for the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California. She is the defending champion in the singles and recieved a bye for the first round. So her first match will be tomorrow in the second round against Maleeva Magdalena, who won the tournament in 1995 and is also number 41 in the world. She defeated Jana Nejedly of Canada 6-0 6-3.
Martina partnered Lindsay Davenport to become the number one seed doubles pairing. They played their first round match today and defeated Debbie Graham (USA) and Rita Grande (ITA) in straight sets 6-2 6-4.
