The History of Thanksgiving
Long, long ago some people (today known as Pilgrims) decided it was time for a new way of life. They were Christians who wished to have religious freedom. They set sail from their homeland in England and traveled to America. They had a very long, very difficult journey, and many people became ill and died before reaching America. Their ship struck a large rock (Plymouth Rock) on the Massachusetts coastline. Their ship disabled, they settled in this strange land, far from their homeland. The native Indians were very hostile to the settlers at first, and the settlers were afraid of the Indians because of their strange ways and frightening appearance. Eventually the pilgrims and the Indians became friendly, teaching each other about many things. The Indians taught the pilgrims how to plant corn and many other good foods. The Pilgrims shared some of their tools and skills with the Indians. They became friends. After the harvest, the pilgrims were very grateful for their bounty, and the Indian's help and invited their new friends to share in a feast of thanks.
And so, the very first Thanksgiving came into being.Today, Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated by all Americans, whatever race or religion; it's a holiday everyone can celebrate. It is a special time for families to share a special meal and to rejoice in thankfulness for all of their blessings. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November each year.
Turkey is the most popular dish served, usually with stuffing, and many other foods.
My Family's Thanksgiving Plans
My church hosts a Thanksgiving Eve communion worship service which we will attend. Then, on Thanksgiving Day, I will be cooking a feast for my extended family.
We will begin our meal (as we do every evening) with a prayer. We will have a chance to spend some special time with our family, which is the very
best part of Thanksgiving, for me :)I wish all of you a joyful Thanksgiving
filled with the loving presence of family and friends.
Remember to count your blessings every day,
not just on Thanksgiving.HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Christ, all creatures, here below; Praise Holy Spirit, Comforter; One God, Triune, whom we adore. Amen (United Church of Christ Version) |
