In May of 1978, four social workers from Cape Breton County completed a study on voluntary services provided in the county. The conclusion stated, "...single parents incidents in this area where a mother is caring for her son, in a father-absent home, is higher at this time per capita than in larger metro areas in the province.

This group of four became the center of a 13-member steering committee for Big Brothers of Cape Breton County. The organization became a provincial member of Big Brothers of Canada on November 30, 1978 and an affiliated member on February 14, 1984.

Big Brothers of Cape Breton was incorporated January 22, 1979 and in 1986, the Big Sisters program began. The agency's name was changed to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape Breton County on February 2, 1987.

Since 1993, Francine Hall has filled the position of Director of Operations. Ms. Hall has been with the agency since July 1988. Nicole MacDonald, Administrative Assistant was hired in October 1997.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape Breton County is a non-profit organization and registered with Revenue Canada under the charities Act.
