CHECKLIST OF HAWAIIAN MUNICIPAL SO-CALLED DOLLARS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

by Simon Cordova

Revised March 26, 2008

This publication updates, expands, and revises the variety catalog presented in my series of articles on Hawaiian "municipal trade dollars" (now referred to as municipal so-called dollars) in Volumes 33 and 34 of the Token and Medal Society Journal (see Selected References at end of checklist).

Manufacture of Hawaii's municipal so-called dollars has been farmed out to several private mints, both in the islands and on the mainland, resulting in a large assortment of types and varieties. The regular-issue so-called dollars are known to exist in bronze, transitional bronze-brass alloy, brass, and cupronickel. The bronze to brass pieces are classified as having planchet type AE, which is the traditional numismatic abbreviation for copper, bronze, or brass. Most of the AE varieties have a transparent to opaque, lacquer-based surficial finish, often applied in an antique style. Some have an opaque, gold-like finish that does not actually contain gold, and other varieties are plated with gold, silver, or chrome. In addition to the regular base-metal issues, sterling silver and .999 pure silver pieces have been produced for sale at premium prices. The Kauai Chamber of Commerce also issued eighteen 1973 dollars on 21-karat gold planchets.

The dollars are 38 to 39 millimeters in diameter, unless noted otherwise; and, with the exception of the 1959 Maui Chamber of Commerce, Statehood Year Souvenir Coins, all have medallic die orientation (top to top). The 1959 Maui issue has coin die orientation (top to bottom).

In my classification system, die types have been assigned numbers, and die-type combinations (or marriages) are described as follows: obverse die-type number / reverse die-type number. Each dollar variety has been given a catalog number, and is defined in the listing by the date (if any) on the dollar, followed by the die-type combination, the planchet type, the edge type, the rarity number, and finally the equivalent Medcalf and Russell catalog number (if any). For example, a listing such as: "AL-50 1973 20/120 GP PE R3 2MD-703", means Aloha Dollar number 50 (AL-50), is dated 1973, has obverse die type 20 and reverse die type 120 (20/120), is gold plated AE (GP), has a plain edge (PE), is rarity 3 (R3), and is listed by Medcalf and Russell as 2MD-703. Over 200 varieties are included in this checklist. Wherever possible, I have maintained the catalog numbers used in the final three articles of my TAMS series.

The following abbreviations are used in the classification system:

AE  Bronze, brass, or transitional bronze-brass alloy

CN  Cupronickel

CP  Chrome-plated AE

GD  Gold

GL  Gold-like finish

GP  Gold-plated AE, unless another planchet metal is designated

ND  No date

PE  Plain edge

PF  Proof

RE  Reeded edge

SI  Silver

SP  Silver-plated AE

SS  Sterling silver

Application of the following rarity scale is based in part on mintage figures (where available), but is largely subjective. Rarity-scale assignments are therefore arguable and subject to continual review and revision.

R1  Common

R2  Scarce

R3  Very scarce

R4  Rare

I wish to thank Ted Boxall, Jonathan Clark, Bob Gardner, Don Medcalf, and Bernard von NotHaus for their help with this publication. Also, the late Merle Olson contributed some valuable advice and information during the early stages of the project.  Special thanks to Don Duncan, who - as a result of his active search for Hawaiian municipal trade dollars - has provided me with numerous additions to this list.  Last, but certainly not least, thanks to my daughter Michelle for her patient assistance in the editing process.

The following checklist undoubtedly has errors and omissions. I would appreciate hearing from you if you have any comments, suggestions, or new listings.  My e-mail address is:  sicordova@aol.com .  In the checklist, I have added a few links to images of die types.  I plan to add many more as time permits.
