Juda Loeb Erlanger was born in Ichenhausen, son of a butcher. He lived in Altenstadt , and was the owner (together with a gentile) and director of a factory that manufactured wooden shoe-trees . The factory was built in 1865 by Juda Loeb and called at the time "Erlanger und Winkle". It was first a match manufacture, but about 5 years later became a shoe-tree factory, because of the Swedish match monopoly (This information was received from Richard Winkle who runs the factory today, 2001). For many years he served as chairman of the Jewish community. On the 1st of July 1895 he was found dead near the river Iller. Apparently he had committed suicide because of difficulties having to do with the business. |
8.7.1842? According to an entry of death-registry 15/1895 St.Amt Illereichen-Altenstadt (Sterbeeintrag), Levi Erlanger , Juda-Loeb's father, was married not to Sara Vogel but to Fanny nee Bach or BACHRACH. |
"Witnesses: Gerson Kahn and Nathan Weis, Rabbiner Schwab"... Trauungsregister Altenstadt/Iller , now at the Stadtarchiv Augsburg (BA ILLERTISSEN 4860). |
He lived in Altenstadt, house No. 49. |
"Juda Erlanger sold his part of the factory in the 1890s and was found dead (drowned) on the bank of the river Iller shortly thereafter. His death was rather a mystery and it is not clear whether he committed suicide (some rumours said there were irregularities at the time he sold his part of the factory to Winkle) or whether he simply drowned trying to cross the river. In those days it was quite wild and without bridge. A small boat was used to cross it. It is also reported that Juda was playing a important part in the Jewish community in Altenstadt, was a most upright honest man ..."- Claire Erlanger, 2001 |
