Early in the 20th Century the family moved from Massbach to Schweinfurt, where Bernhardt managed a local chain shoe store "Schuhhaus Heusinger". On June 15 1942, Meta wrote a letter to her daughter Marie in St.Louis. Among other things, she tells her that since May 1942, she and her husband had to leave their house and move to the "Judisches Gemeindehaus" on Ruckerstrasse 19.
