A brief description of "Intarsia"....the laying or inlaying of wood onto a solid wood background, forming a puzzle or mosaic technique. Intarsia is a lost art form best known in Italy that has been all but lost for hundreds of years and is being revived for its beauty and exquisite craftsmanship. Different woods are utilized to achieve the color variation needed, without the aid of paint or stains. Go here for a brief
history
on Intarsia. Below you will find some pictures of my work with a short description included. I will be adding more pictures frequently as work projects are completed.
Please click on the thumbnail pics below, for full size pics to view.
~ OWL ~
This is the first project I did.....it is not my own design, however it did help me to realize that I could combine my skills of sculpting and drawing to eventually come up with "my own" designs and patterns.
~ LONE WOLF ~
My second project.....The wolf in this picture is not my design either....I was just starting to get the feel of my own ability when I started on this project. The background, tree and framing was my idea. I started off, intending for the wolf to be an individual plaque...and then, well.....I discovered that I wanted to try my own hand at designing. From this point on, I have not used anyone elses patterns or designs.
~ SERENITY ~
I have entitled this picture "Serenity" because of it's serene setting....(good name, huh?...grin) It has 380 pieces and has 2 different types of wood that were used for the effect I wanted to achieve. I do not use stains, as there is a vast color variety in Western Red Cedar, which is the main wood that I work with. My Intarsia designs are one of a kind, as I make my own patterns, depending on customer specifications or my own imagination. I sign every completed project and title each piece.
~ EAGLE ~
This is a close up of the eagle in my Serenity deer picture...top left hand corner. He has 15 pieces in him, is about 2 1/2 inches in length and shows what kind of detail can go into even the smallest of projects.
~ DROOPY ~
There are 157 wood pieces in my Basset Hound picture. My love for animals helped me to capture the essence of this mother and her puppy. I would like to say that my husband has helped me with learning about different types of wood and usually makes the framework for me. He also helps me with the fine sanding and has given me all of his support....very helpful.
~ SIGN ~
This is a sign for local company that I was commissioned to do. I worked completely from the customer specifications to achieve the final outcome. I have another sign for a different company that has been completed but do not have it added to this page yet.
~ FISH ~
This fish plaque is not titled, as I only title my framed work projects. It was a commissioned piece that goes with a set of three.
~ 2nd FISH ~
The 2nd fish plaque that goes in the set of three. I have just added the picture below, of the final piece that completes this set.
~ CORAL ~
Coral....completes the set of three in the above mentioned fish pictures. This was a very challenging project because of its complete 3-D appearance. I had to attach each coral branch together with alot of thought and planning so that there would be varied depths and heights. The fact that it was an individual plaque added to the challenge of my imagination.
~ CORAL SIDE SHOT ~
This is a side shot picture of the above Coral to show the 3-D effect of what I was trying to achieve.
