What are Garden Party Hats?

I began my company, Garden Party Designs, in the winter of 1997 by making hats for friends to wear for special occasions. In time, more and more friends and acquaintances began to ask for custom-made hats to match favorite outfits, because they simply could not find what they wanted in the department stores.  Recently, with the slew of period films, it seems that fashion is being influenced by the elegance and romance of the Edwardian and Victorian era. My designs reflect that sense of style and individuality that allows women to uniquely accessorize an outfit and make a truly wonderful statement.

How are Garden Party Hats made?

I carefully craft each hat by hand. The straw is dyed and blocked the same way that skilled milliners have done for hundreds of years. After the hat is blocked, I shape it by hand – and each hat winds up with its own unique color and shape, impossible for even me to duplicate. However, that’s what makes each such a special work of art. I decorate my collection with any number of trims, including hand made silk ribbon flowers or silk georgette flowers (also crafted by me!) and dyed to match ribbon. Also, many hats are trimmed with vintage lace that is sometimes over 100 years old. Truly, this is not just a fashion statement, it’s a one-of-a-kind work of art.
