Since I always seem to be playing travel agent for family and friends, I decided to pull together all of my favorite travel websites, from destinations to ways to get there. I'll be adding to this list as I find new sites.
Some of these travel sites require a credit card just to search; they say they don't charge you unless you book a ticket. Sorry, but I don't agree with that nor do I recommend giving anyone your credit card number over the internet, unless you're sure of the site owner. However, I have purchased tickets from several travel sites, including Southwest Airlines, U.S. Airways, Yahoo Travel, Expedia and Preview Travel with absolute success! Some sites even allow you to select your seats at the time of ticketing by looking at a floorplan of the airplane! Plus, most travel sites will e-mail you a confirmation immediately.
HINT: If you travel frequently or are a bargain hunter, I recommend signing up for e-mail notification of travel bargains by the various travel sites. Some of these bargains are not available to the general browser! As an example, I set up Yahoo to notify me of airfare bargains to Chicago -- I got a great rate through the notification system, while neither that flight nor that rate appeared on the general Yahoo travel site.
