Hello
This is an appeal to all Sleemans.
I am working on a British television programme for
Channel 4 called Extraordinary Ancestors. The aim
is to trace the ancestors of a variety of
"ordinary" British people. We then take these
people on
a journey of discovery to one of their ancestral
villages/regions where we tell them more about the
history of their family and of the community to
which they belonged.
In this particular case, I am making a 10-minute
film about a man from Cardiff - Keith Murrell -
and his maternal ancestors - the Sleemans.
We are particularly interested in featuring George
Sleeman who was born around 1826 (either in
Swansea or in Micheldean) and died in 1882 at
Ruardean Hill (or
East Dean) where he lived and worked as a miner.
He was the great great grandfather of Keith. He
was himself the son of another George Sleeman, who
was a blacksmith.
Do you know anything about this George Sleeman?
Also, does anyone know any Sleemans still living
in the Forest of Dean area in the UK or any
Sleemans who might be directly related to George
Sleeman?
I would be extremely grateful for any help.
My request is very urgent since I will be filming
in the Forest of Dean in 10 days.
Best wishes

My mother's maiden name is Stella Sleeman. She is the daughter of the late Philip Sleeman b1874 who was a master at Harrow School. He was descended from the Cornish (St Tudy) Sleemans who later moved to Bristol and who included among their number Sir Will
m Sleeman famous for suppressing the Thugs in India in the early 19th century. My mother's cousin Judge Colin Sleeman has done a huge amount of research on these Sleemans going back to the 16th Century and has published his findings privately. I have a co
y and would be happy to share the information.
Comments:
I have a large amount of data on Sleemans going back to the 15th c., much of it the result of over 50 years research by my late father the Rev. Arthur James Sleeman of Uplyme, Devon, England (sometime of Bristol). Our branch of the family came from paris

My dad made several geneological sheets of our family dating back to 1700 which I have inherited (along with my brother Richard of Rochester Hills, Mi). My dad was in contact with Arthur Sleeman (an Anglican Minister) of England who provided much of the
information my father collected. My father was also in contact with the Kalamazoo Sleemans for many years
who, I think, are distant relatives. My great grandfather John Sleeman immigrated to Linden, Mi where he was a carriage maker, after serving in the f
rce in Ontario in the late 1800s that put down some uprising. He was rewarded with a large plot of land in northern Ontario in the middle of nowwhere north of Sudbury. He came from the same area in Guelph, Ontario where the Sleeman
brewery now is. My uncle (deceased) John (Jack) Sleeman flew in Korea and retired from the Air Force. He visited the Sleemans in England and found a Sleeman
brewery that no longer is in business. Many Sleemans immigrated to Canada from England and Cornwall and then immigrated
o Michigan from Canada. I've searched in the web phone directory and found Sleemans listed all over the U.S. There are (I think) 3 other Donald Sleemans in southeastern Michigan - which my girlfriend says is a frightening thought! In addition to me the
e is cousin Kevin in Hayward, CA and cousin Karen in Tampa, Fl, as well as my brother in Rochester Hills. The stories are endless. And it's S-L-E-E-M-A-N to those who
don't know how to spell it; and for those who don't understand the web site the reasons, we are an inquisitive bunch of people.

Most ironically, I became a mining engineer before I had a clue of how intimately the Sleeman family history is associated with mining. Most of us had ancestors who were born in Cornwall, which was one of the great tin producing areas of history. (Tin i
essential in making bronze). As the easier ore began to peter out, the miners tunneled out under the sea to follow the veins and in so doing developed much “cutting edge” technology-especially the Cornish pump for dewatering mines. As the tin became ev
r scarcer in early to mid 19th century, the now unemployed but very highly skilled miners started to migrate to the great mining areas of the new world where many of their descendents (us) are found today. Examples are Australia, Michigan, Ontario, Weste
n US, Africa etc. Our ancestors were known fondly (along with other Cornish people who immigrated) as “Cousin Jacks” and “Cousin Jennies”. Along with Welsh people, they were also well known for their singing.
I have noticed (as many others no doubt have) in my family history research how many of our ancestors and living descendents are named Richard, George, or Arthur.
Thought many of you would be interested in the foregoing. Still trying to trace my grandfather Richard (1842-1927) from Montana back to his Cornish heritage.

I recently became a Sleeman by marriage. My husband, Martin mentioned having found this site several months ago (yes he did sign the guest book :-) and I thought I'd check it out. He's the only Sleeman I'd ever heard of so its neat to see there are so m
ny more out there. Wish my side of the family had something similar! Thanks!
Comments:
My grandfather Richard Sleeman was born in 1847 and died in 1927. He spent most of his life in Missoula, Montana and may even have been born there. He had five boys (Arthur, Elmer, Ernest, Richard and Erwin) and one girl (Florence). Richard, Elmer and
lorence all died childless while Erwin had one son (Elmer) who in turn had two sons (George and Dick). Arthur had children but I do not know their names or where they live.
My father, Ernest was born in 1886 and died in 1972. He had three children my sisters June born 1936, Florence born 1943, and myself born 1940.
I would much appreciate any information that you might have that might connect my grandfather Richard with his roots back in Cornwall and others of his family.

Very interesting! My father emigrated from St Cleer, Cornwall, England in 1949. I know he had two uncles who emigrated to California, USA to work on the railroad. I would very much like to get in contact with any of their descendants.
Comments:
Ancestors from Redruth in Cornwall UK, generally appear to be either John or Thomas.

mean anything in English ? In dutch it means "man on a sledge", but that doesn't
make much sens to me. I hope you can tell me more about it. I'm looking forward to learn
more about the history of the name Sleeman. Thanks, and keep up the good work. Greetings,

My dad is Richard Sleeman and is from Rochester, New York. He is the son of Doug and Mary
(Turpin) who were born in Cobourg, Ontario. However, their parents were born in England
(I'm not sure which town). I think it is somewhere near Liverpool? My dad is the youngest
of the 10 children. Many of his siblings are still in Rochester but others are in Ohio,
Utah, Florida and Virginia. As I'm sure you can imagine with 10 kids, there are a number
of cousins (somewhere in the area of 40+ and many whom I hav never met). I am the last
born of all the grandchildren (I'm 28). This page might be a good way to hear from some of
them. I have been living in New York City for the past nine years and have yet to run
across a family member but you never know??? Gr at job on putting the page together!!

My mother was a Sleeman, and our ancestors hail from Boyton, near Launceston, in Cornwall,
and from parts of Devon and Cornwall along the Tamar River. Three male ancestors emigrated
to NZ in the 1870s-80s and settled in the South Island. A sister ended up near Adelaide,
in South Australia, while several other siblings stayed on in Cornwall. I have made
contact with all those branches of the family and have documented various family tree
details, which I am happy to provide to fellow genealogists.

which is from where most of your folks would have originated. The earliest references
which I have found are concentrated in a fairly small area either side of the River Tamar
which forms the border between Cornwall and Devon. The earliest reference to the name
which I have found to date is to a Thomas Scleman who was living at Stoke Climsland in
1522. I am happy to help with local research but, as I am self-employed, I can't always

There is another movie in which William Henry Sleeman is referenced -- Gunga Din
(1939),with Cary Grant, Victor McLaughlin, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. It's in a scene
where Cary Grant's commanding officer (played by actor Montagu Love) talks about
"thugg e" -- the ritual stranglers who try to overtake them later in the film --
and how then-"Colonel Sleeman crushed them fifty years ago." (The film's setting
was in the 1880s or 1890s, and William Sleeman was busy with the Thugs in the 1830s, so
it's accura e). I love this website! Please contact me so we can share more!

Fantastic to see a noticeboard for Sleeman's. They sure travelled far and wide. SLEEMAN is
a Cornish and or Devon surname and can have two meanings 1. Clever Person. 2. One who
lives at a Slee. (Slee means grassy slope) Most of the Sleeman's in the North Island of
New Zealand are related as they are quite new immigrants (this century) and there are
quite a few in the South Island as yet I have made no connection with my husband's family.

It's good to see that you all are around on the Internet. Sorry I can't converse with you
via e-mail. It is really interesting how everyone can communicate with each other (even if
it is not audible). MF

I am primarily researching the Sleemans who came to Western Maryland from Cornwall,
England in 1858. I also collect information on other Sleeman family trees in case a future
connection is made.
