Joseph de Medeiros Cuarta was born in Faial da Terra on the east end of the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. His baptism record lists his name as Jose, and somewhere along the line it became Joseph. The last name Cuarta was spelled with a "C" on the 1920 United States census, however his father and prior generations used the spelling "Quarta". Joseph had at least two siblings, a sister Maria born 1/17/1875 and a brother Joao born 2/8/1882 who died four months later on 6/17/1882. The following individuals are Joseph's ancestors. Manoel had a prior wife named Claudina Fernandes. Claudina had a son Eugenio when she married Manoel and she and Manoel had three more children of their own named Emilia, Jose and Maria. All four children and Claudina died during the years 1872 and 1873.
