Antonio Jacinto Pereira was born in Agua d'Alto, Sao Miguel, Azores. He had four brothers although two of them died in infancy. The other two brothers, Manoel and Jose, left around the turn of the century for Brazil. About a year later, one of the brothers wrote home to inform everyone that the other brother had died. That was the last correspondence from the surviving brother. Antonio's paternal ancestors came from Fanais da Luz with his father moving to Agua d'Alto to marry his mother. His mother's ancestors are mostly from the town of Agua d'Alto. This parish however has records only back to 1833, and prior records are located in one of the two parishes of the nearby town of Vila Franca do Campo.

Family lore has it that Manoel wrote a letter to his future inlaws asking for the hand of his beloved. However, his choice of a bride unfortunately had at least one unmarried older sister and it was unacceptable to have a younger sister marry before her older sibling. As a result, Manoel was not allowed to marry his first choice, and he had to marry the older sister. This is why his bride Joaquina is about 10 years older than he.

Antonio also had a prior wife, Francisca Roza Candida with whom he had two children. Antonio and Francisca were married in 1823. Francisca died in 1835.

After Francisca died, Antonio married a woman named Dona Maria Candida in 1823. The title "Dona" implies a higher social standing than the norm. It is a puzzle why a woman of her means would marry a poor widower with 14 children. Antonio and Maria went on to have at least one more child.

This family is a good example of how names changed in the Azores. In this town, at this time, there were four men named Manoel Rodrigues and three of them had wives named Maria da Costa. To distinguish the last three families, somehow an identifier was added to the name, in this case the word "pires", written all in lower case. A second Manoel Rodrigues had another word added to his name, and the third had nothing added. Our Manoel continued through life with "pires" until finally on his wife's obituary, the "pires" is capitalized and appears officially as his name. It would be interesting to see if his male children used the name Rodrigues or Pires or both.
