Elizabeth Tavares was born in 1886 in Hawaii. The island of her birth is currently unknown although it is probably Oahu although some think she was born in Hilo on the big island. She had two older siblings, Maria and Eugene. Two records in Hawaii indicate that Maria arrived in Hawaii with her parents as a 7 month old child. If these records are correct she would have been born in Sao Miguel near the end of 1881. Eugene was born in Hawaii probably in 1883 or 1884. There was also a younger sister born in Hawaii probably in 1887 or 1888. An infant died with her mother in childbirth around 1890. The younger sister died at age 3 on the family's return voyage to the Azores from Hawaii and was buried at sea. Both Maria and Eugene died early in life, Eugene before 1920 and Maria at approximately the same time.
It is very unlikely that "Elizabeth" is Elizabeth Tavares' given name. Azorians on Sao Miguel and those newly arrived in Hawaii gave their daughters standard Portuguese names, never "Elizabeth". This name was probably adopted at an early age after arrival in the United States. The most recent information on this matter is that her given name might have been Luzia and no one will know for sure until her birth record is found in Hawaii, or her name found on a passport or on a ship's passenger list.
The following individuals are ancestors of Elizabeth. Her parents and a few from the prior generation came from Faja da Cima, Sao Miguel, Azores. The records for this town don't go back before the 1830's and earlier records are found in nearby towns. Some ancestors also moved to Faja da Cima from other, more distant villages. All of these villages are listed below with an abbreviation included with each record. These towns are:
Faja da Beixo: FdB
Faja da Cima: FdC
Fanais da Luz: FdL
Ponta Delgada: PD
Porto Formoso: PF
Rabo da Peixe: RdP

15 Jacintha Augusta b 1856 FdC d abt 1889 in Hawaii. Possibly 4 children
Manoel and Jacintha sailed in 1882 in the ship "Monarch" to Hawaii to make their fortunes in the sugarcane industry as did so many thousands of Portuguese with the same optimism in the late 1800's. Manoel was to build housing for the Portuguese immigrants in the islands. Unfortunately, Jacintha died around 1889 or 1890 in childbirth, and Manoel with his remaining children set sail back to the Azores. One child died on the voyage and was buried at sea. Very quickly, Manoel remarried in the Azores to a woman named Maria (who was supposed to be a cousin of Jacintha's), and the whole family came to the United States in the early 1890's. They settled in Taunton, MA where they lived for many years on Williams Avenue. Manoel became a contractor and he built many houses in the Portuguese area of Taunton around Floral Street, Cherry Street, and others. He built his duaghter Elizabeth's family home at 44 Cherry Street, Taunton.

Manoel had another wife who died before 1708. Her name was Izabel de Oliveira. Also the name Rego Baldaia (also spelled Baldaya) is a rather well known name from this era. My paternal grandmother (a Rego) is descended from the Rego Baldaia family also. There is another web page with more information on the Rego Baldaia family back to the original marriage of a Rego to a Baldaia in the very early 1500's. To see this page click here.
