25 YEARS OF CURSILLO IN EAST CAROLINA
EC#75 began the second quarter-century of the Cursillo Movement in the Diocese of East Carolina. Hundreds of members of our Diocese have worked hard over the years to make our Cursillo what it is today: an active, enthusiastically-supported and successful means of engendering apostleship in adult Episcopalians. We owe a lot of that success to the Team and Pilgrims of our very first Diocesan Cursillo—it only takes a spark to get a fire going…
EC#1 was held at Camp Leach, a well-established recreational area near Washington, NC, from October 29 to November 1, 1981. The Team was composed of South Carolina Cursillistas: Spiritual Directors Jack Beckwith, Rick Belser and Ed Walker; Lay Rector Smokey Heyward; Observing Rector Johnny Corbett; and other team members Reid and Jane Beeb of Sumter; Mazie Belser, John’s Island; Carlyle and Suzanne Blakeney, Mr. Pleasant; George Brewer, Isle of Palms; Keith and Michele Bryan, John’s Island; Andy and Catherine Burke, Pinopolis; Winston and Judy Charles, Summerville; Jean Corbett, John’s Island; Judy Heyward, Mt. Pleasant; Doc and Martha Lachicotte, Pawley’s Island; Lindsay and Betsy Luke, Summerville; Ray and Beth Marsh, Mt. Pleasant; Grainger and Florida McKoy, Wadmalaw Island; and Sandy and Debbie Sanders, Monck’s Corner.
The roster of Pilgrims attending EC#1 used familiar names [and no titles], but most will be recognized by any Episcopalian who has been in East Carolina for awhile: Rod and Dottie Andrew; Andy and Ada Atkinson; Dick and Judie Bickford; Al and Susan Butler; Bob and Ann Cook; Sandy Crawford; Hunley and Dink Elebash; Sid and Ming Gardner; Don and Enid Hickman; John and Frances Murchison; Bill and Mary Jo Oakley; Sid and Nancy Sanders; Ed Sharp; Bill and Jessie Sibert; and David and Rosemary Zimmerman.
We have some Insta-Matic [remember those?] photos from that weekend. Enjoy, and give thanks for those who pioneered our Cursillo movement!
