My Mother's Day "love letter" to my Mom:

May 10, 1998

Dear Mom,

Thank you for always being there for me throughout the years.
I remember your creativity with birthday cakes and your

thriftiness with baby food jar candle holders and rummage sale

clothes. We always had fun things to do thanks to you like

making block buildings, art work, crafts, reading, riding bikes,

swimming, and playing with neighbor kids. You made my slumber

parties special and were always thinking up fun games and

interesting recipes like bunny eggs, Spam, hot dishes, hamburger

stroganoff (which I still make for my family), macaroni &

cheese, triangular peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, goulosh,

grilled cheese, and roast beef & potatoes on special occasions

among others. You encouraged me to cook and clean on my own

which gave me a sense of independence and self worth. Thanks,

mom, for not making fun of my cardboard brown chocolate factory when

everyone else called it a poop factory! I recall

making a paper mache' pinata and volcano with your assistance

too. I even forgive you for always dressing Wanda and me like

twins and the "bowl" haircuts. As I look back now, the

dresses you made were pretty cute even if they did match. You

always helped me with school work and activities like making

cotton candy for the carnival and making my bumble bee costume

for a play and that dish soap bottle tiger puppet. Even

though we didn't have a lot of money, you always managed to dress

us up in a different homemade Halloween costume every

year and went trick-or-treating with us around trailer courts

since we didn't have many neighbors. I'm grateful for your

support at school conferences and swim meets. You put up with a

lot of my teenage mood swings. I got my love of pictures from

you and the scrap books, baby book, school days album,

and many photo albums with detailed descriptions you made

really keep my childhood memories alive. The trips to South

Dakota, California, Tennessee, Canada, and many other places were

always fun and exciting--especially the parks, cheap motels/mobile

home, and pools. Going to Opryland (Zane breathing

down my neck), Universal Studios, Mount Rushmore,

the MN State Fair, Farm Fest '76 (Loretta Lynne & Mel Tillis

rode by then we missed them at Happy Chef), etc. etc. bring

back many happy memories. Thanks for trying to keep us three

kids from fighting all the time and being our referee on numerous

occasions (mine and Wanda's soy sauce fight). You've

been so supportive to me through high school, having

Heather with spina bifida at a young age and offering to quit

your job to help raise her, going back to school when she was

2, my jobs, getting our new house started, making curtains, and

being such a terrific grandma to Heather and April!! I'm glad

you came through your leg amputation surgery okay - we were afraid

of losing you for awhile there. I remember going to visit you

at the hospital every day on my lunch hour for a whole month

and how boring the days must have been to someone who is

usually so busy. I know it hasn't been an easy life for you but

I'm glad you're my Mom. I really respect you for going back

to school and working after raising three kids. Thanks, Mom,

for giving me life and for everything else! (And for not

giving me a weird name like Wanda and Zane - ha ha). I love you

and appreciate you very much Mom!

Have a Happy Mother's Day! Love, Chris
