Slavery - Worldwide Evil

Many people think slavery does not exist, but modern day slavery, such as child labor, forced labor, forced prostitution, servile marriages and debt bondage, DOES exist and IS happening!

For the most part, contemporary slaves are not sold at auctions, or fit the image of shackles and whips. Yet there is an estimated 27 million people in bondage. This is a staggering number, and may indeed be the highest number of slaves ever in the world before!

A great number of modern day slaves are often stolen or kidnapped from their homes, others are lured away by money, good jobs or simple things like a trip to the movies.

Still others are "mortgaged" for the debts of their families, with virtually no hope of repaying these debts because of high interest rates and extra costs incurred for food and lodging. As the family incurs these extra costs, they may be forced to pass on their ever mounting debt to their children for generations. Yes! People ARE BORN into slavery every day!

So, what is slavery?

Common characteristics distinguish slavery from other human rights violations.

Today a slave is:

forced to work - through mental or physical threat
owned or controlled by an "employer", ususally through mental or physical abuse or threatened abuse
dehumanised, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as "property"
physically constrained or has restrictions placed on their freedom of movement
