The following is biographical sketch of HENRY CLAY LAWLER from W. H. Perrin's KENTUCKYa History of the State, 1886 edition ONLY. ( co_ authors really were W. H. Perrin, J. H. Battel and G. C. Kniffin, published 1886 by F. A. Battey Louisville, Ky.) These were sold by subscription the three authors visiting several counties each year with different biographical sketches in each edition. Page 681, Simpson County HENRY C. LAWLER was born October 2, 1840, on the farm on which he now resides, four miles northwest of Franklin1 Simpson Co91 Ky. He is the youngest of eight sons and four daughters born to Samuel and Mary (Neely) Lawler, who were born respectively in Mercer and Ohio Counties . Samuel Lawler was born in 1793; came to Logan County about 1815, where he engaged in the selling goods, and there formed the acquaintance of his wife whom he married in 1818 About 1820 he located in Simpson County, two miles north of. Franklin, for a short time, when he moved to Franklin and conducted a spinning and carding factory . About 1833 he located where Henry C. now resides, and where he had purchased and improved about 650 acres of land. He owned about forty Negroes when the war broke out. James Lawler, grandfather 0ú Henry C., was born in Ireland; ~ to America just before the war for independence; married Nancy Lee, of a Virginia family of Lees. He was one of the first settlers of Logan County, Ky. where he engaged in farming Mrs. Mary Lawler was a daughter of David and Elizabeth (Van Dyke) Neely who were reared in upper Kentucky, and moved to Logan County about 1802, where they remained on a farm during life. David Neely was a son of James Neely, who was born in Scotland; immigrated to America before the Revolution, and settled in Simpson County, Ky. About 1800, where he entered lands. Elizabeth ~ the grandmother of our subject, was the daughter of Garret Van Dyke, who married a Miss Stone, Henry C, was reared on a farm, and received a common English education. At the age of twenty_three he commenced the struggle of life for himself on a farm. He has been constantly employed in tilling the soil and making a happy home for his family. He married, January, 1865, Angie Louisa Holland, of Simpson County. a daughter of Joel and America (Perkins) Holland, who were born respectively in Maryland and Virginia, came to Kentucky about 1825, and settled in Logan, now Simpson County. They were of English and German origin Mr.Lawler had born to him by this marriage six children: Nancy Edmonie, Mary Virginia, Alice Gertrude, Samuel J. (dec'd.), Carrie Omega, and Bessie Ella, Mr. Lawler and wife are members of thePresbyterian Church. He has been a member of the Grange.
