The first history and account that is thus far known begins in 1757, at which time, James Lawler appears in the *census. Your author, has heard two different stories, regarding James arrival to America from Ireland, which shall be passed on. One story of James is he came to America, married, stayed only a short time, then returning to Ireland. While there his wife died, where upon James, returned to America. The second has James and an older brother named John, came to America together, but once here the two separated. Each going a separate direction. As Irish tradition has it , the older of the sons would receive any inheritance. So the story says that, John , the oldest was the rich brother, while James the poorer. It is difficult for the author, to imagine how or why brothers could come to a foreign country together, and then separate. Yet realizing that this is very possible, it can not be disputed. (* The censes of 1747, show a John and James Lawlor.) It is the thought, by the author, that perhaps there is some truth in both stories. If James had come to America with his brother, John, in 1747 or so, married and then returned to Ireland as one story is told. His wife then died sometime with in these ten years, and James then returned to America, in 1757, where at this time he appears in the census of Mercer, Co. It is not known if either of these stories has any validity, all that is known for sure that James Lawler, is in fact your author`s 4th great grandparent. He was an early pioneer of Kentucky, dates show he came through Kentucky several years prior to Daniel Boone, carving his initials in the trunk of a tree somewhere on the trail to Boonesville. * Note`s Daniel Boone (kinship) It is thought that James did not serve in the Rev. War, but was a "Patriot" He married Nancy Lee, of the Virginia, Lee`s. A fine upstanding family name, that comes from the "Leagh, or Leigh" Their marriage is recorded in Mercer Co. Nancy is the daughter of William Lee and Ann Wallace, and the niece of the infamous, General Robert E. Lee. |
