Alexander Matheson

Alexander Matheson was born in 1741 in the Parish of Fodderty in the Highlands of Scotland. At present, it is strongly believed his parents were Charles and Christian MacKenzie Matheson from Fodderty Parish. (See Map)

Alexander married Mary Miller in Fodderty around 1764. It is believed Mary's father was Alexander Miller from the town of Dingwall, north of Inverness, Scotland. Dingwall and Fodderty are only a few miles apart. As best as can be determined, they emigrated to America in 1771 and settled in North Carolina in Iredell County (Lord Grandville's Territory).

Alexander Matheson was an elder at the New Sterling Presbyterian Church near what is today, Taylorsville, North Carolina. He wrote many religious papers. In his will, these papers were left to three of his children. He was a blacksmith as well.

Alexander and Mary had four sons Donald, John, Francis, Elisha and a daughter Christian. There is discussion there was a son William, but this has been difficult to substantiate.

At the same time, a George Matheson settled in Rowan County, North Carolina. It is believed, George and Alexander were brothers or at least cousins. From my research, the name George is common in the Mathesons from Easter-Ross, Scotland. George and Ann Matheson had at least four sons: Gilliam, Charles, John and William.

Alexander's son John is my relation. He married Barbara McKenzie around 1798. They had at least two sons, John and Eli and possibly a son named William. In the late 1830s, John, a captain in the militia, moved to Cherokee County, NC. Around 1848, Eli joined John in Cherokee County.
