MISSION STATEMENT
Welcome to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Community in Portsmouth, New Hampshire!
We, the Catholic family of Immaculate Conception, called by God and inspired by the humility and love of Mary the Mother of Jesus, strive to be a strong and joyful sign of the Kingdom of God by proclaiming the Good News, serving our brothers and sisters, growing in faith, building community, and continuing the mission of Jesus Christ in Portsmouth.
HISTORY
We are the third oldest church in the diocese of Manchester and were originally a mission of St. Aloyisus, (now St. Mary's) in Dover.
In November, 1851, a priest was assigned to the 300 Catholics of the city who organized under the title of St. Mary's and began construction of the church in the Spring of 1852.
In 1872, the parishioners rebuilt the church which had been destroyed by fire in 1871, renaming it Immaculate Conception.
A parish school was constructed in 1887 on Austin Street, staffed by Sisters of Mercy; its present building dates from 1904.
Need for a larger, more structurally sound church to accommodate the growing Catholic population led to construction of the present church, opened on Easter, 1934 and dedicated in October, 1934.
The faith and perseverance of the parishioners throughout the last 150 years enable our parishioners to reap the benefits of a rich legacy.
