Winter Wonderland

Welcome to Winter
I love winter in Iowa!!! Winter is one of my two favorite seasons, autumn being the other one. My only complaint is there isn't enough snow to suit me. Oh, we get snow, but unless we get a freak snowstorm in October or something the real stuff doesn't come along till January.
I also enjoy the colder temperatures. I am very warm blooded by nature, and the cooler air suits me much better than does any other.

I love to bake in the winter: more so than at any other time of year! When I cook, it's because I have to, but when I bake, it's because I want to. With the holidays of Christmas and New Year there are so many good reasons to bake all the delights that I can. As with the autumn, there is nothing that gives me more of a warm & fuzzy feeling that baking, and making the inside of the house so toasty warm, while the weather ouside is so "frightful". Truly, it brings out the "Suzy Homemaker" in me.
I will tell more on this subject on the winter holiday pages that I link to later on this page.

And when it snows, ah...the fun to be had! The first pleasure that I get from snow is watching it come down. At times it comes in small snowflakes, many or few, while the wind blows it hither and yon. But at other times it comes down in such huge snowflakes that it looks as though whole snowballs are floating softly to the ground. The latter of these two forms is my favorite!
As a child, I can remember making snow angels, snowmen, snowforts from which to throw snowballs in mock battle with others, and the thrill of sledding down a steep hill at such a pace that the cold wind takes your breath away.
As an adult, I must admit that I participate in many of those same activities, with a few different ones included. Within the first few hours of a good snow I love to find an empty parking lot that allows enough space for me to "cut cookies" by sliding on the snow and /or ice in a car. (I don't recommend this for the faint of heart or for those who don't know how to do it.)
One time, years ago, my sister and her son were visiting from Florida and we were on the way from my home to my mother's home. I found a side street that had no cars parked on either side of the road and I took full advantage of it by speeding up, locking my breaks and giving the wheel of my stationwagon a good turn. My children, used to such antics from me, screeched with delight as we went careening sideways down about half the block. My sister, however, turned as white as the snow that covered the street. Bless her heart! I never even gave a thought that it may scare her.

And now for the holidays that winter has to offer! (I only have 2 done...more will come later!)
