Antoni G. Szoka 1887-1946 This family history of Antoni G. Szoka and Antonina Yuskiewecz Szoka has been compiled to honor my grandparents for their dreams in coming to America in search of a better life for their children and their descendants. Antoni G. Szoka had two other brothers, Ludwig, and Casmir. We are told that the brothers, left Grodno, so that they would not be drafted into the Russian Army. Antoni and Ludwig came to the United States together and Casmir came later. We know that Antoni and Antonina were born, raised, and married in Grodno, Poland, which is now part of Belsarus. Antoni and his brother Ludwig traveled from Grodno to Antwerp, Belgium. They boarded the Rotterdam and traveled to New York harbor and arrived at Ellis Island on or about 22 January 1908. From New York he traveled to Holyoke, Massachusetts. Antonina Szoka came to the United States on the Red Star Line, steamship "Birma" and departed Latvia from the port of Libau on September 19, 1909 and arrived in New York on September 28, 1909. Antonina was on the "detained alien's list" which was common during that time period waiting for Antoni to come and pick her up. Their home address was listed as 613 South Bridge Street, Holyoke MA. They later moved to Springfield, MA. Eventually they moved to West Suffield, Connecticut when Antoni opened his own business butcher/grocery market. While is Springfield Mass. Florence Fraska's father told Antoni that he should open a business for himself and took Antoni by horse and buggy throughout the area to pick a site to establish a business. Antoni picked South Grand Street in West Suffield, Connecticut. The original building a 2 story, wooden construction with the butcher/grocery store downstairs and a cigar factory upstairs. The building was destroyed by fire in 19__. The building was rebuilt out of block and stucco construction. The butcher/grocery store was again in 1/2 of the downstairs and the rest of the house was their home. (The building is still standing). There is some confusion relating to Grodno, Poland and/or Gornica, Russia. The "Declaration of Intention" papers that Antoni G. Szoka signed state that they came from Gornica, Russia. My limited amount of research on Poland's history reveals that Grodno was part of Poland in the 1700's. The first partition of Poland took place in 1772 when Austria, Prussia, and Russia divided the Polish terriory among themselves. Austria seized land in southern Poland; Prussia took land in the west; and Russia took land in the east. As a result, Poland lost about a third of its territory and half its population. More land was divided in 1793, and again in 1795. Later, Austria, Germany, Lithuania, and Russia gave up large amounts of territory to Poland. In 1939, at the begining of World War II, Germany and Russia divided Poland almost in half. Poland again disappeared from the face of Europe. In 1945, at the end of World War II, a new Poland was formed. The Allies took most of the land from Germany, and Russia gave two small areas back to Poland. The names of Antoni G. Szoka & Antonina Yuskiewecz Szoka have been entered on "The American Immigrant Wall of Honor" at Ellis Island.
